ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are an evolutionarily conserved family of widely-expressed proteins that use ATP hydrolysis to catalyze the transport of various molecules across extracellular and intracellular membranes. As the largest family of transmembrane proteins, ABC genes comprise several subfamilies. Eukaryotic ABC transporters are largely responsible for trafficking hydrophobic compounds either within the cell, as part of a metabolic process, or outside the cell, for transport to other organs or for secretion from the body. ABCF2 in particular plays a putative role in tumor suppression at metastatic sites and in the endocrine pathway for breast cancer and may be a prognostic marker for clear cell ovarian adenocarcinoma.

The PDGF Receptor Type A (Alpha platelet-derived growth factor receptor precursor, CD140a antigen), a 170kD protein, binds all three isoforms of PDGF with high affinity whereas the PDGF Receptor Type B, a 190kD protein, appears to bind only the PDGF BB homodimer with high affinity. Both receptors are transmembranous, ligand activated protein tyrosine kinases, which phosphorylate a number of important signal transduction proteins, which are bound with differential affinities via SH2 domains. The response of any given cell to PDGF will depend on the types of receptors displayed on the surface and isoforms of PDGF present in the extracellular environment.

DISP2 is the second of three known homologs of the D.melanogaster protein Dispatched. It is a multitransmembrane protein containing two PTCH/DISP domains and is thought to be involved in the release of lipid-anchored Hedgehog from producing cells. Hedgehog is a major player in signaling pathways during embryogenesis, tissue regeneration, and carcinogenesis and the DISP proteins have been implicated in these pathways. Recently, it has been shown that DISP2 is translationally regulated by the microRNA miR-214 in zebrafish. Expression of this miRNA decreased DISP2 promoter activity in vitro and its overexpression in zebrafish resulted in a phenotype identical to that observed by DISP2 mutants. At least two isoforms of DISP2 are known to exist.

LPAAT-epsilon is a membrane-bound protein belonging to the LPAAT family. Members of the LPAAT family have a well-known role in lipid biosynthesis and they may also play a role in tumor progression. LPAAT-epsilon is expressed in a tissue-specific manner in prostate and testis. LPAAT-epsilon is most closely related to AGPAT8, which is highly expressed in heart.

Stat 5a protein is a transcription factor activated by hormone and cytokines. Two highly related, but distinct Stat 5 genes (Stat 5a and Stat 5b) were identified in mouse. The amino acid sequences of Stat 5a and Stat 5b show 96% sequence similarity, and both proteins are co expressed in most tissues of both virgin and lactating mice. However, differential accumulation of Stat 5a and Stat 5b mRNA has been reported for both muscle and mammary tissue. Stat 5a is critically involved in a variety of physiological functions, including reproduction, lactation, immune function and somatic growth.

As a potassium channel protein, KCNF1 plays a role in regulating apoptosis and proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle (PASM) cells. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) restrict proliferation and can induce apoptosis in normal human PASM cells and will upregulate expression of KCNF1 in PASM cells in vitro. KCNF1 is expressed in heart, brain, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney and pancreas.

NEPH2 undergoes alternative splicing to produce two isoforms and contains a C-terminal cytoplasmic domain which it uses to interact with Podocin, a podocyte protein involved in ultrafiltration. Defects in the gene encoding NEPH2 are associated with mental retardation autosomal dominant type 4 (MRD4).

Glucose Oxidase is a dimeric enzyme that binds to β-D-glucose and aids in its oxidation into D-glucono-1,5-lactone which then hydrolyzes to gluconic acid. Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) is a cofactor to Glucose Oxidase that acts as the initial electron acceptor and is required for this oxidation to occur. Glucose Oxidase is a natural preservative found in honey, where it reduces atmospheric oxygen into hydrogen peroxide which acts as an antibacterial barrier. Glucose Oxidase is also commonly used in biosensors in which it conveys levels of glucose by keeping track of the number of electrons passed through the enzyme. In this application, Glucose Oxidase is connected to an electrode and the resulting charge is measured.

The protein was initially characterized by its involvement in the binding of sperm to the zona pellucida of the oocyte. Recent studies indicate that it is also involved in additional cell-cell adhesion functions such as immune cell migration and metastasis. AVEN is a recently discovered protein that blocks apoptosis induced by Apaf-1 and caspase-9. It is thought that AVEN functions by binding to Bcl-xL, an antiapoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family, and to Apaf-1, possibly interfering with the ability of Apaf-1 to self-associate, suggesting that AVEN impedes Apaf-1-mediated caspase activation. Higher levels of AVEN mRNA are seen in patients with acute leukemia than in control patients, suggesting that AVEN may be useful as a prognostic indicator in leukemia patients.
