The nuclear pore complex protein, Ran-binding protein 2 (Ran BP-2 or Nup358), contains four Ran-binding domains. Ran BP-2 is a large scaffold cyclophilin-related protein expressed in photoreceptor cells. Ran BP-2 localization at cytoplasmic fibrils emanating from the nuclear pore complex and interaction with the Ran-GTPase support its role in nucleocytoplasmic transport processes. In humans, the Ran BP-2 gene is partially duplicated in a gene cluster and lies in a hot spot for recombination on chromosome 2q. This genetic heterogeneity renders further significance of this genomic region in human disease due to its possible involvement in genetically linked disorders such as juvenile nephronophthisis, congenital hepatic fibrosis and chorioretinal dysplasia.

Pbx 1, 2, 3 and 4 are members of the TALE (three amino acid loop extension) family of homeodomain-containing proteins. Human pre-B cell acute leukemias are frequently associated with a t(1;19)(q23;p13.3) chromosomal rearrangement, which creates a chimeric gene encoding a fusion between the E2A and Pbx 1 gene products. Pbx 2 and Pbx 3 share 92% and 94% respective identities with Pbx 1 over a 266 amino acid region flanking their homeobox domains, while all three proteins are quite divergent at their amino- and carboxy-termini. Two forms of Pbx 1 and Pbx 3 each differ primarily in their carboxy-termini and result from alternative mRNA splicing. Unlike other homeotic selector genes which are expressed transiently during development and differentiation, Pbx gene transcripts are ubiquitously expressed in both fetal and adult tissues and cell lines. Additionally, Pbx 2 and Pbx 3 transcripts are detected in lymphoid cells, which do not express Pbx 1. Pbx 4 expression is confined to the testis, especially to spermatocytes in the pachytene stage of the first meiotic prophase.

Ficolin B is the designation in mouse and rat of a protein also known as L-ficolin, ficolin-2, collagen/fibrinogen domain-containing protein 2, serum lectin p35, EBP-37 or hucolin. Ficolin B is a 313 amino acid member of the ficolin lectin family. It is a secreted innate immunity pattern recognition molecule expressed in liver and plasma that forms a disulfide-linked homopolymer. This extensive N-terminal disulfide bridge formation can lead to a functional dodecamer polypeptide. Ficolin B binds to DNA ligands expressed by late apoptotic and necrotic cells to increase attachment and engulfment. Variation in ficolin B concentrations amongst individuals is associated with polymorphisms in the promoter and structural portion of the FCN2 gene. In patients with Beht's disease (BD), there exists a significant difference in allele frequency for FCN2 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the -557 and -64 promoter sites within HLA-B51 positive and HLA-B51 negative subgroups.
