A disorder characterized by abnormalities of motile cilia. Respiratory infections leading to chronic inflammation and bronchiectasis are recurrent, due to defects in the respiratory cilia; reduced fertility is often observed in male patients due to abnormalities of sperm tails. Half of the patients exhibit randomization of left-right body asymmetry and situs inversus, due to dysfunction of monocilia at the embryonic node. Primary ciliary dyskinesia associated with situs inversus is referred to as Kartagener syndrome.

The smallest of the human chromosomes, 21 makes up about 1.5% of the human genome. Chromosome 21 contains nearly 300 genes and 47 million base pairs. Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is the disease most commonly associated with chromosome 21. Alzheimer's disease, Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are also associated with chromosome 21. Translocations are found to occur between chromosome 21 and 8, and chromosome 21 and 12, in certain leukaemias. DnaJC28 (DnaJ homolog subfamily C member 28), also known as C21orf55, C21orf78 or MGC27620 is a 388 amino acid protein that is expressed in the fetal and adult brain, testis, uterus, spleen and liver. It has been suggested that DnaJC28 may play a role in protein folding or as a chaperone. The DnaJC28 gene product has been provisionally designated DnaJC28 pending further characterisation.

The gene encoding the mouse alloantigen, Ly-6C, maps to chromosome 15 and encodes a 131 amino acid protein that belongs to the Ly-6 family of glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked proteins. Ly-6 family members share amino acid homology throughout a distinctive cysteine rich protein domain that incorporates O-linked carbohydrates. Murine Ly-6 molecules have unique patterns of tissue expression during hematopoiesis from multipotential stem cells to lineage committed precursor cells, and on specific leukocyte subpopulations in the peripheral lymphoid tissues. Ly-6C is predominantly expressed on murine peripheral CD8 T cells. Ly-6C is involved in endothelial adhesion, the killing of target cells by CTLs, inducing TCR-mediated activation of IL-2 and IFN-?production in CD8 T cells and the homing of CD8 T cells. In addition, Ly-6C may act as a signaling molecule of LFA-1 activation.

Albumin is a soluble, monomeric protein which comprises about one-half of the blood serum protein. Albumin functions primarily as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones and plays a role in stabilising extracellular fluid volume. Mutations in this gene on chromosome 4 result in various anomalous proteins. Albumin is a globular unglycosylated serum protein of molecular weight 65000. The human albumin gene is 16961 nucleotides long from the putative & apos;cap & apos; site to the first poly(A) addition site. It is split into 15 exons which are symmetrically placed within the 3 domains that are thought to have arisen by triplication of a single primordial domain. Albumin is synthesised in the liver as preproalbumin which has an N-terminal peptide that is removed before the nascent protein is released from the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The product, proalbumin, is in turn cleaved in the Golgi vesicles to produce the secreted albumin.

Cellular receptors for blood proteases regulate chemotaxis, extracellular proteolysis, and growth behavior of normal and malignant cells. Effector cell protease receptor-1 (EPR1) is a receptor for the coagulation protease factor Xa. EPR1 is characterised by a cysteine-rich extracellular module, a single membrane-spanning domain, and a serine-rich cytoplasmic tail featuring at least 15 potential phosphorylation sites. EPR1 also contains 2 N-linked glycosylation sites, 4 O-linked glycosylation sites, and a chondroitin sulfate attachment site, which may provide anchoring for carbohydrate chains, EPR1 transfectants bind to factor Xa in a specific and saturable manner, and in the absence of factor V/Va promote prothrombin activation in a factor Xa concentration-dependent reaction. Activated platelets and megakaryocytes express EPR1. Both EPR1 and membrane-bound factor Va are thought to be required to mediate factor Xa binding to the activated platelet to form a functional prothrombinase complex.
