The BTB domain, also known as the POZ (poxvirus and zinc finger) domain, is an N-terminal homodimerization domain that contains multiple copies of kelch repeats and/or C2H2-type zinc fingers. Proteins that contain BTB domains are thought to be involved in transcriptional regulation via control of chromatin structure and function. RCBTB1 (regulator of chromosome condensation (RCC1) and BTB (POZ) domain containing protein 1), also known as GLP, CLLD7, CLLL7 or E4.5, is a 531 amino acid protein that localizes to the nucleus and contains two BTB (POZ) domains and six RCC1 repeats. Expressed ubiquitously, RCBTB1 is thought to be involved in cell cycle regulation, specifically via chromatin remodeling. The gene encoding RCBTB1 maps to a region on human chromosome 13 that is frequently deleted in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia, suggesting a possible role for RCBTB1 in tumor suppression.

The Lewis histo-blood group system comprises a set of fucosylated glycosphingolipids that are synthesized by exocrine epithelial cells and circulate in body fluids. The glycosphingolipids function in embryogenesis, tissue differentiation, tumor metastasis, inflammation, and bacterial adhesion. They are secondarily absorbed to red blood cells giving rise to their Lewis phenotype. This gene is a member of the fucosyltransferase family, which catalyzes the addition of fucose to precursor polysaccharides in the last step of Lewis antigen biosynthesis. It encodes an enzyme with alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase and alpha(1,4)-fucosyltransferase activities. Lewis blood group antigens are carbohydrate moieties structurally integrated in mucous secretions. Lewis antigen system alterations have been described in gastric carcinoma and associated lesions. Y-box proteins interact with a wide variety of nucleic acid structures to act as transcription factors and mRNA masking proteins (1). The modular structure of Y-box proteins includes a highly conserved N-terminal cold-shock domain (CSD, equivalent to the bacterial cold-shock proteins) and four basic C-terminal domains containing arginine clusters and aromatic residues (4). MSY2 is expressed in testis and ovary where it may repress translation of parental mRNA (5,6). The gene encoding human MSY2 maps to chromosome 17p11.2-13.1 (5). YB-2 (MSY3,4 in mouse) is also known as DNA binding protein A and is highly expressed in the testis, heart and muscle (7,8).
