This protein contains a PHD-finger, which is a common motif in proteins involved in chromatin remodeling. This gene can activate p53 trans-activated promoters, including promoters of p21/waf1 and bax. Overexpression of this gene has been shown to inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis. Belonging to the glycosyltransferase 14 family, GCNT7, also known as Beta-1,3-galactosyl-O-glycosyl-glycoprotein beta-1,6-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 7, is a 430 amino acid glycosyltransferase that is localized to the Golgi apparatus. Other members of this family include GCNT1, GCNT2, GCNT3, GCNT4 and GCNT6. GCNT1 has been shown to play an important regulatory role in the biosynthesis of mucin-type O-glycans, which serve as ligands in cell adhesion. Specifically, GCNT1 expression in leukocytes regulates the synthesis of core 2 O-glycans that carry sialyl-Lewis x (sLex) oligosaccharides, which confer high affinity binding to Selectin proteins. Since downregulation of Selectin ligand expression has been shown to inhibit tissue infiltration, glycosyltransferase 14 family members represent potential drug targets for the treatment of inflammatory disorders and other pathologies involving Selectin proteins.

Menaquinone 7 (MK-7) is a vitamin K2 analog that has been found in a variety of fermented foods. It increases osteocalcin, osteoprotegerin, and RANKL mRNA expression in osteoblastic MC3T3E cells. MK-7 (1 µM) increases alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium content in femoral-metaphyseal tissues isolated from normal and skeletal-unloaded rats. In vivo, MK-7 (100 µg/g diet) inhibits aortic and myocardial calcification and decreases aortic alkaline phosphatase tissue concentrations in a rat model of extraosseous calcification. It also increases trabecular number, bone mineral density, and bone mineral content in a rat model of ovariectomy-induced bone loss.
