The ABL1 protooncogene encodes a cytoplasmic and nuclear protein tyrosine kinase that has been implicated in processes of cell differentiation, cell division, cell adhesion, and stress response. Activity of c-Abl protein is negatively regulated by its SH3 domain, and deletion of the SH3 domain turns ABL1 into an oncogene. The t(9;22) translocation results in the head-to-tail fusion of the BCR (MIM:151410) and ABL1 genes present in many cases of chronic myelogeneous leukemia. The DNA-binding activity of the ubiquitously expressed ABL1 tyrosine kinase is regulated by CDC2-mediated phosphorylation, suggesting a cell cycle function for ABL1. GEFT is a 580 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that is highly expressed in excitable tissues such as brain, heart and muscle, and weakly expressed in small intestine, colon, liver, placenta and lung. GEFT may play a role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization in different tissues since its activation induces formation of actin stress fibers. GEFT works as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the Rho family of small GTPases and links specifically to G alpha q/11-coupled receptors in Rho A activation. GEFT is an important regulator of processes involved in axon and dendrite formation. Involved in skeletal myogenesis, GEFT seems to be an exchange factor primarily for Rac 1 in neurons. Existing as two alternatively spliced variants, GEFT contains a DH (DBL-homology) domain and a PH domain.

Chromosome 2 contains a probable vestigial second centromere, as well as vestigial telomeres, which gives credence to the hypothesis that human chromosome 2 formed as a result of an ancient fusion of two ancestral chromosomes, which are still present in modern day apes.
