CCT2 is one of eight largely unrelated subunit proteins found in a protein chaperone complex known as the chaperonin-containing TCP-1 (CCT) or TRiC complex. The CCT complex is an abundanct cytoslic component that is credited with helping newly synthesized polypeptides adopt the correct conformation (1). Proteins that fold and assemble with the help of CCT include the cytoskeletal proteins actin and tubulin as well as up to 15% of newly synthesized eukaryotic proteins (2). CCT2 is the β-subunit of the chaperone complex and is one of several CCT proteins that exhibit increased expression in response to stress. This implies that the CCT complex helps cells recover from protein damage by assisting in protein folding and assembly (3). CCT subunit levels also change throughout the cell cycle, with lower proteins levels (and reduced chaperone activity) found during induced cell cycle arrest during at M phase (4). Each CCT subunit is thought to perform a specific function during protein folding and assembly (5); CCT2 exhibits both actin and tubulin binding activities (6,3) but the exact molecular function on this subunit remains uncertain.

The proteasome represents a large protein complex that exists inside all eukaryotes and archaea, and in some bacteria. The main function of proteasomes is to degrade unnecessary or damaged proteins by proteolysis. The most common form of the proteasome, known as the 26S Proteasome, contains one 20S Proteasome core particle structure and two 19S regulatory caps. The 20S Proteasome core is hollow and forms an enclosed cavity, where proteins are degraded, as well as openings at the two ends to allow the target protein to enter. The 20S Proteasome core particle contains many subunits, depending on the organism. All of the subunits fall into one of two types: alpha subunits, which are structural, serve as docking domains for the regulatory particles and exterior gates blocking unregulated access to the interior cavity; or beta subunits, which are predominantly catalytic. The outer two rings in the proteasome consist of seven ?subunits each, and the inner two rings each consist of seven beta subunits.

Localized to both the cytoplasm and the nucleus, EXOSC10 is part of the post-splicing exosome complex and is involved in mRNA surveillance, mRNA nuclear export and nonsense-mediated decay of mRNAs containing premature stop codons. against EXOSC10 have been found in patients with scleroderma and/or polymyositis (chronic diseases of the skin and muscle, respectively), suggesting that EXOSC10 may be involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Two isoforms of EXOSC10 exist due to alternative splicing events.

Connexin 29 expression is restricted to the central nervous system and is present in brain, spinal cord, and sciatic nerve samples. It has been suggested that connexin 29 in the mature CNS contributes minimally to gap junctional intercellular communication in oligodendrocyte cell bodies. Rather, connexin 29 is targeted to myelin where it, along with connexin 32, may contribute to connexin-mediated communication between adjacent layers of uncompacted myelin.

Protocadherin beta 13 is a member of the protocadherin beta gene cluster, one of three related gene clusters tandemly linked on chromosome five. The beta cluster contains 16 genes and 3 pseudogenes, each encoding 6 extracellular cadherin domains and a cytoplasmic tail that deviates from others in the cadherin superfamily. The extracellular domains interact in a homophilic manner to specify differential cell-cell connections. Unlike the alpha and gamma clusters, the transcripts from these genes are made up of only one large exon, not sharing common 3' exons as expected. These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins are integral plasma membrane proteins. Their specific functions are unknown but they most likely play a critical role in the establishment and function of specific cell-cell neural connections.
