Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases consist of a family of enzymes that catalyze the specific aminoacylation of tRNA by their cognate amino acid in the initial step of ribosome-dependent protein biosynthesis. FARSLA, also known as FRSA, CML33, FARSL or PheHA (phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase, alpha subunit), is a member of the class-II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase family and is highly expressed in proliferating cells of bone marrow. FARSLA is a cytoplasmic phenylalanine-tRNA synthetase that functions as a heterodimer consisting of a catalytic alpha-subunit and a regulatory beta-subunit. The alpha-subunit is responsible for forming the amino acid binding pocket, mediating the ATP/aminoacyl adenylate binding, and interacts with the acceptor stem of the tRNA. FARSLA functions in a cell cycle-dependent and differentiation-dependent manner.

The EF-hand domain is a twelve amino acid loop motif that is commonly found in proteins that participate in calcium-binding events within the cell. EF-hand domains generally exist in a pair that, together, form a stable four-helix bundle that enables the binding of calcium ions. Swiprosin-2, also known as EFHD1 (EF-hand domain-containing protein D1), SWS2, PP3051 or MST133, is a 239 amino acid protein that contains two EF-hand domains and is expressed in a wide variety of tissues, including brain, liver, heart, kidney, testis, ovaries and spleen. Expression of Swiprosin-2, a possible calcium-binding protein, is upregulated during neuronal differentiation, suggesting a role for Swiprosin-2 in brain development and maturation.

The 3-HAO family of proteins consists of intramolecular dioxygenases that contain non-heme ferrous iron. HAAO (3-hydroxyanthranilate 3,4-dioxygenase), also known as HAO or 3-HAO, is a 286 amino acid monomeric cytoplasmic protein that belongs to the 3-HAO family. Utilizing Fe2+ ions as a cofactor, HAAO participates in the formation of quinolinic acid (QUIN), and excitotoxin, by catalyzing the oxidative ring opening of 3-hydroxyanthranilate to 2-amino-3-carboxymuconate semialdehyde. HAAO may play a role in disorders that are associated with varying levels of QUIN expression, and is widely expressed in peripheral organs, including kidney and liver. Existing as two alternatively spliced isoforms, the gene encoding HAAO maps to human chromosome 2p21 and mouse chromosome 17 E4.

BOLA1 (BolA-like protein 1), also known as CGI-143, is a member of the BolA/yrbA family of proteins. Members of this family are homologs of the Escherichia coli protein, BolA. BolA-like proteins are evolutionarily conserved from prokaryotes to eukaryotes and are believed to play a role in cell-cycle regulation or cell proliferation possibly via some sort of transcription regulation of other genes. In addition, BolA-like proteins may contain nucleic-acid binding properties, as is suggested by a fold structure that is similar to the KH-fold, a motif known to participate in nucleic-acid binding. Characteristic of BolA-like proteins which typically consist of approximately 100 amino acids, BOLA1 is a 137 amino acid protein.
