Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for several seconds and may have profound consequences for the firing pattern of the neuron. Each component of the AHP is kinetically distinct and is mediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels. The protein encoded by KCNN2 is activated before membrane hyperpolarization and is thought to regulate neuronal excitability by contributing to the slow component of synaptic AHP. The encoded protein is an integral membrane protein that forms a voltage-independent calcium-activated channel with three other calmodulin-binding subunits. KCNN2 is a member of the KCNN family of potassium channel genes.

KCNK12 Antibody: KCNK13 and KCNK12 (also known as THIK1 and 2) are the first two members of a novel two pore-forming P domains K+ channels subfamily. The pore loop domain, a highly conserved region common to all potassium channels, is involved in determining potassium ion selectivity. Members of this family are all characterized by four transmembrane domains and may function to help influence the resting membrane potential of cells. KCNK12 is expressed mainly in the brain and lung, but also observed in the kidneys, heart and skeletal muscle. KCNK12 is closely related to KCNK13 (58% identity at the amino acid level), but could not yet been functionally expressed in vitro and may require other proteins to become active.

Also required during cardiomyogenesis by regulating the exit of cardiomyoblasts from the cell cycle via down-regulation of CDKN1C/p57Kip2. Acts as a regulator of hepatic gluconeogenesis by phosphorylating and repressing the CREB-specific coactivators CRTC1/TORC1 and CRTC2/TORC2, leading to inhibit CREB activity. Also regulates hepatic lipogenesis by phosphorylating and inhibiting SREBF1. In concert with CRTC1/TORC1, regulates the light-induced entrainment of the circadian clock by attenuating PER1 induction; represses CREB-mediated transcription of PER1 by phosphorylating and deactivating CRTC1/TORC1 (By similarity).
