Functions as a calcium permeable cation channel involved in fluid-flow mechanosensation by the primary cilium in renal epithelium. Together with TRPV4, forms mechano- and thermosensitive channels in cilium (PubMed:18695040). PKD1 and PKD2 may function through a common signaling pathway that is necessary for normal tubulogenesis. Acts as a regulator of cilium length, together with PKD1. The dynamic control of cilium length is essential in the regulation of mechanotransductive signaling. The cilium length response creates a negative feedback loop whereby fluid shear-mediated deflection of the primary cilium, which decreases intracellular cAMP, leads to cilium shortening and thus decreases flow-induced signaling. Also involved in left/right axis specification downstream of nodal flow: forms a complex with PKD1L1 in cilia to facilitate flow detection in left/right patterning (By similarity).

Neuroglycan C is a brain-specific chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (CSPG) implicated in the proliferation of neural stem and progenitor cells. Neuro-glycan C is a single-pass membrane protein that can manifest as a part-time proteoglycan depending on the tissue expressing it. In its proteoglycan form, Neuroglycan C exhibits chondroitin sulfate glycans and functions as a receptor for midkine, a growth factor that binds heparin, to affect cytoskeletal changes. By means of ectodomain shedding, the ectodomain of Neuroglycan C is able to enhance neurite outgrowth from neurons. Neurite growth stimulation is affected by both an EGF-like and an acidic amino acid domain found on the shed ectodomain. Both domains instigate neurite growth, however, these domains exhibit differing functionality as to number of neurites produced and neuron types stimulated.

Follicular dendritic cells are cells that facilitate antigen recognition by B cells in follicles. This kind of dendritic cell is not bone marrow derived and is not a kind of blood cell. It is purely a resident of the follicles of secondary lymphoid organs. B cells form germinal centers around follicular dendritic cells in lymphoid organs. Dendritic cells form from monocytes, white blood cells which circulate in the body and, depending on the right signal, can turn into dendritic cells or macrophages. The monocytes in turn are formed from stem cells in the bone marrow.In normal tissue this antibody identifies dendritic cells and a proportion of B lymphocytes. Evidence in pathological tissue and functional studies suggests it binds to an epitope expressed by antigen presenting cells. Within the macrophage/dendritic cell populations the epitope seen by RFD1 is coexpressed with RFD7 by a subset of cells that exhibit suppressive activity on T cell stimulation.

LRRTM4 (leucine-rich repeat transmembrane neuronal protein 4) is a 590 amino acid member of the LRRTM protein family. Expressed in neuronal tissues, LRRTM4 may play a role in the development and maintenance of the vertebrate nervous system. A single-pass type I membrane protein, LRRTM4 contains 10 LRR repeats. LRRTM4 is expressed as two isoforms produced by alternative splicing.

The GAN gene is located on chromosome 16 and, with mutation, may lead to giant axonal neuropathy, a nervous system disorder characterized by increasing malfunction with growth. The rare disorder Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome is associated with chromosome 16, as is Crohn's disease, which is a gastrointestinal inflammatory condition.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, which is characterized by harmful vascular defects, is associated with the chromosome 9 gene encoding endoglin protein, ENG. Familial dysautonomia is also associated with chromosome 9 though through the gene IKBKAP. Notably, chromosome 9 encompasses the largest interferon family gene cluster. Chromosome 9 is partnered with chromosome 22 in the translocation leading to the aberrant production of BCR-ABL fusion protein often found in leukemias.
