The engulfment of dying cells is a specialized form of phagocytosis that is highly conserved across evolution and is mediated by the concerted action of several molecules. MEGF10 is an engulfment receptor protein that localizes to the plasma membrane in a punctuated pattern. The MEGF10 protein shares structural similarities with nematode engulfment receptor cell death abnormal-1 (CED-1). MEGF10 function is modulated by the ATP binding cassette transporter ABCA1, which is an ortholog to CED-7. It is expressed at the cell surface in clusters around cell corpses during engulfment, and during the engulfment of apoptotic thymocytes is recruited to the bottom of the forming phagocytic cup.

It is able to form homodimers and heterodimers with other family members, which include Mad, Mxi1 and Myc. Myc is an oncoprotein implicated in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. The homodimers and heterodimers compete for a common DNA target site (the E box) and rearrangement among these dimer forms provides a complex system of transcriptional regulation. Mutations of this gene have been reported to be associated with hereditary pheochromocytoma. A pseudogene of this gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 7. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.

Myosin molecules consist of two major regions: tails (rods) and heads. They aggregate into filaments through the tail region and interact with actin and with ATP through the head region. Multiple forms of myosin heavy chains exist for each muscle type-skeletal, cardiac, smooth and non-muscle isomyosin forms exist in different types of skeletal muscle, depending on the physiological function of the muscle. The proteasome is responsible for producing these antigens from the components of foreign pathogens. MHC class 1 molecules consist of an α heavy chain that contains three subdomains (α1, α2, α3) and a non-covalent associating light chain, known as β-2-Microglobulin. β-2-Microglobulin associates with the α3 subdomain of the α heavy chain and forms an immunoglobulin domain-like structure that mediates proper folding and expression of MHC class 1 molecules. Collagen proteins (products of the COL gene family) are fibrous, extracellular matrix proteins with high tensile strength and are the major components of connective tissue such as tendons and cartilage. All collagens contain a triple helix domain and frequently show lateral self-association in order to form complex connective tissues. The Collagen Type XXV precursor produces the proteolytic fragment CLAC (collagenous Alzheimer amyloid plaque component), which deposits in senile plaques associated with amyloid beta peptides (Abeta) in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. CLAC binds to the fibrillized form of Abeta, which disturbs the structure and function of plasma membranes.

HGFA Inhibitor 1 is an endogenous inhibitor of the kunitz-type serine proteinase HGF-activator (HGFA). HGF was first described as a hepatocyte-specific mitogen and survival factor, and has since been shown to exert a variety of actions on many cell types by binding to its MET receptor. HGF is activated by cleavage of the single-chain form to form a two-chain version by HGFA. HGFA Inhibitor 1 also inhibits trypsin, and MTSP-1 (Matriptase), a serine proteinase that also activates HGF. HGFB Inhibitor 1 is a splice variant of HGFA Inhibitor 1, and contains a 16 amino acid insert after the first kringle domain, relative to the HGFA Inhibitor 1 sequence.
