The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the chromogranin/secretogranin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins. It is found in secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. This gene product is a precursor to three biologically active peptides; vasostatin, pancreastatin, and parastatin. These peptides act as autocrine or paracrine negative modulators of the neuroendocrine system. Other peptides, including chromostatin, beta-granin, WE-14 and GE-25, are also derived from the full-length protein. However, biological activities for these molecules have not been shown. PKMYT1 is a member of the serine/threonine protein kinase family. It preferentially phosphorylates and inactivates cell division cycle 2 protein (cdc2), and thus acts as a negative regulator of entry into mitosis (G2 to M transition). Annexins bind to phospholipids and may be involved in regulation of membrane transport, membrane channel activity, and interaction of the cell membrane with the extracellular matrix. Annexin A7 is a member of the annexin family of calcium dependent phospholipid binding proteins. The Annexin A7 gene contains 14 exons and spans approximately 34 kb of DNA. Structural analysis of the protein suggests that Annexin A7 is a membrane binding protein with diverse properties including voltage sensitive calcium channel activity, ion selectivity and membrane fusion.

This MAb reacts with a wide variety of simple epithelia. It does not react with stratified squamous epithelia. It reacts with epithelial tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, breast, pancreas, ovary, and thyroid. Cytokeratin 18, which belongs to the type A (acidic) subfamily of low molecular weight keratins, exists in combination with cytokeratin 8. It is reported that tissues from gastrointestinal tract are positive for both cytokeratin 8 and 18 but do not contain cytokeratin 14. Tissues from gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and urogenital tract, as well as endocrine and exocrine tissues and mesothelial cells are positive for cytokeratin 18.
