Biological Significance: Glyceraldehyde 3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is a metabolic enzyme responsible for catalyzing one step in the glycolytic pathway, the reversible oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. Because GAPDH is a protein expressed in large amounts and which is required at all times for important "house keeping" functions, levels of GAPDH mRNA are often measured and used as standards in studies of mRNA expression. Increasingly, scientists are making use of specific antibodies to GAPDH in comparable studies of levels of protein expression. This antibody can be used as a loading control for western blotting experiments, allowing comparison between the level of this protein and others in a cell or tissue. Apart from a role in glycolysis, GAPDH may have other roles such as in the activation of transcription. GAPDH is reported to bind to a variety of other proteins, including the amyloid precursor protein, mutations in which cause some forms of Alzheimer's disease, and the polyglutamine tracts of Huntingtin, the protein product aberrant forms of which are causative of Huntington's disease. Associations with actin and tubulin have also been reported. The protein may also have a role in the regulation of apoptosis, and interestingly migrates from the cytoplasm into the nucleus when cells become apoptotic.

High density lipoproteins (HDLs) play a critical role in cholesterol metabolism and their plasma concentrations are inversely correlated with risk for atherosclerosis. SR-BI and SR-BII (previously known as SR-BI.2) are the alternatively spliced products of a single gene. SR-BII and SR-BI are identical except for the encoded c-terminal cytoplasmic domain. Both SR-BI and SR-BII bind HDL and mediates selective uptake of HDL cholesteryl ester, but with SR-BII having an approximately 4-fold lower efficiency than SR-BI. SR-BI and SR-BII are expressed primarily in liver and non-placental steroidgenic tissues. Although the role of these scavenger receptors is not completely clear, SR-BII mRNA results from the alternative splicing of SR-BI precursor transcripts with both isoforms mediating selective transfer of lipid between HDL and cells. Therefore, the relative expression and functional activities of these two isoforms create a potential means of regulating selective lipid transfer between HDL and cells.

Selenophosphate synthetase 1 (SEPHS1) belongs to the selenophosphate synthase 1 family, Class II subfamily. It has four different isoforms by alternative splicing. Isoform 1 and isoform 2 are gradually expressed during the cell cycle until G2/M phase and then decreased, which Isoform 3 is gradually expressed during the cell cycle until S phase and then decreased. SEPHS1 can be activated by phosphate ions and by potassium ions. It can synthesise synthesises selenophosphate from selenide and ATP. Selenophosphate is the selenium donor used to synthesise selenocysteine, which is co-translationally incorporated into selenoproteins at in-frame UGA codons.
