Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is an acid- and heat-stable 53 amino acid protein originally found in rodents and humans. It has been shown to be a potent mitogen for a variety of cell types both in vivo and in vitro. EGF binds to the EGF receptor on the surface of cells and mediates intrinsic phosphorylation of the receptor on tyrosine residues. It has been detected in nearly all body fluids, such as urine (urogastrone), saliva, milk and platelet-rich plasma. EGF, TGF?and vaccinia virus growth factor exhibit 30-40% amino acid homology. Several additional members of the EGF/TGF family have been described; these include Cripto, Amphiregulin and the heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor. Amphiregulin and the heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor both bind to the EGF receptor.

The members of this gene family have been implicated as key regulators of embryogenesis, cell cycling, cell lineage restriction and cancer. As such, FOXN2 contains a domain with homology to the forkhead DNA binding domain. FOXN2, or Human T-cell leukemia virus enhancer factor, is a 341 amino acid protein mapping to human gene FOXN2, which has been localized to human chromosome 2p16-p22. This protein, encoded by a 1239-bp cDNA isolated from the Jurkat cDNA library, is capable of binding to a region of the human T-cell leukemia virus long terminal repeat (HTLV-I LTR) located between amino acids 155 and 117. This purine-rich region is important in the regulation of gene expression by the Ets family of transcription factors. FOXN2 is a unique cellular gene that may function in the transcriptional regulation of HTLV-I LTR.

AGXT2 protects from asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA)-induced inhibition in nitric oxide (NO) production. Elevated blood concentrations of ADMA, a methyl derivate of the amino acid arginine and an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthase, is produced by the physiological degradation of methylated proteins and is found in association with diabetes, hypertension, congestive heart failure and atherosclerosis. AGXT2L2 (alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase 2-like 2) is a 450 amino acid pyridoxal phosphate that exists as a homotetramer. Belonging to the class-III pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family, AGXT2L2 localizes to the mitochondria and exists as three alternatively spliced isoforms. Encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 5q35.3, AGXT2L2 may have similar functions as AGXT2.
