The attachment of enveloped viruses to cells and the fusion of viral and cellular membranes are critical early events in the HIV viral infection. This process is mediated by envelope glycoproteins (gp) on the surface of the virus. The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein, gp160, is proteolytically cleaved into gp120 and gp41, which remain noncovalently associated with one another. gp120 is one of the proteins that forms the envelope of HIV. gp120 projects from the surface of HIV and binds to the CD4 molecule on helper T cells. gp120 has been a logical experimental HIV vaccine because the outer envelope is the first part of the virus that encounters antibody. gp41 is embedded in the outer envelope of HIV that anchors gp120. gp41 also plays a key role in HIV's infection of CD4+ T cells by facilitating the fusion of the viral and cell membranes. The nomenclature of the gp proteins describes their respective molecular masses (e.g., gp160, gp120, gp41).

ZNF828, is a 812 amino acid protein that contains one C2H2-type zinc finger and is localized to the cytoplasm and the nucleus. The gene encoding ZNF828 maps to chromosome 13. Comprising nearly 4% of the human genome, chromosome 13 contains around 114 million base pairs and encodes over 400 genes. Chromosome 13 houses key tumor suppressor genes, including BRCA2 and RB1, which are associated with breast cancer susceptibility and retinoblastoma, respectively. Trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, is deadly and the few who survive past one year suffer from permanent neurologic defects, difficulty eating and vulnerability to serious respiratory infections.

Glycogen synthesis is initiated by the autoglucosylation of Glycogenin-1. Specifically, Glycogenin-1 glucosylates itself to begin the synthesis of glycogen in mammalian skeletal muscle. It acts as the primer to which further glucose monomers may be added. All of the Glycogenin-1 molecules contain at least one glucosyl residue before autoglucosylation begins. The first step of the glycogen synthesis occurs when a glucose molecule from UDP-glucose binds to the hydroxyl group of Tyr 194 on the Glycogenin-1 molecule. Using its glucosyltransferase activity, Glycogenin-1 adds more glucoses, each one coming from UDP-glucose. The glycosylation process reaches a plateau when five new glucose residues have been added, at which point glycogen synthase (GS) takes over and further elongates the chain. Glycogenin-1 remains covalently attached to the reducing end of the glycogen molecule.

RBMX2 is a 322 amino acid member of the IST3 family that contains one RRM (RNA recognition motif) domain. The X and Y chromosomes are the human sex chromosomes. Chromosome X consists of about 153 million base pairs and nearly 1,000 genes. The combination of an X and Y chromosome lead to normal male development while two copies of X lead to normal female development. More than one copy of the X chromosome with a Y chromosome causes Klinefelter's syndrome. A single copy of X alone leads to Turner's syndrome. The DnaJ family is one of the largest of all the chaperone families and has evolved with diverse cellular localization and functions. The presence of the J domain defines a protein as a member of the DnaJ family. DnaJ heat shock induced proteins are from the bacterium Escherichia coli and are under the control of the htpR regulatory protein. The DnaJ proteins play a critical role in the HSP 70 chaperone machine by interacting with HSP 70 to stimulate ATP hydrolysis. The proteins contain cysteine rich regions that are composed of zinc fingers that form a peptide binding domain responsible for the chaperone function. DnaJ proteins are important mediators of proteolysis and are involved in the regulation of protein degradation, exocytosis and endocytosis. DnaJA2 (DnaJ homolog subfamily A member 2), also known as HIRA-interacting protein 4 or cell cycle progression restoration gene 3 protein, contains one CR-type zinc finger and is a co-chaperone of HSC 70.

Beta-tectorin is a 329 amino acid secreted protein that contains one zona pellucida (ZP) domain. While it may form homomeric filaments after self-association, Beta-tectorin may also form heteromeric filaments when it associates with ?tectorin. Sound induces movement of these hair cells relative to the tectorial membrane, deflects the stereocilia and leads to fluctuations in hair-cell membrane potential, transducing sound into electrical signals.

ANKRD17 is a 2,603 amino acid protein that contains 25 ankyrin repeats and one KH domain. ANKRD17 is expressed in bone marrow and is thought to be involved in liver development. ANKRD17 localizes to the cytoplasm and the nucleus. ANKRD17 exists as five alternatively spliced isoforms that are encoded by a gene which maps to human chromosome 4. Representing approximately 6% of the human genome, chromosome 4 contains nearly 900 genes. Notably, the Huntingtin gene, which is found to encode an expanded glutamine tract in cases of Huntington's disease, is on chromosome 4. FGFR-3 is also encoded on chromosome 4 and has been associated with thanatophoric dwarfism, achondroplasia, Muenke syndrome and bladder cancer. Chromosome 4 is also tied to Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, methylmalonic acidemia and polycystic kidney disease. Chromosome 4 reportedly contains the largest gene deserts (regions of the genome with no protein encoding genes) and has one of the two lowest recombination frequencies of the human chromosomes.

PIPPIN is a Y-box protein (also called cold-shock (CSD) domain-containing protein) and belongs to a family of highly conserved RNA-binding transcriptional regulators. Predominantly expressed in brain cells and localizing to the nucleus and the cytoplasm, PIPPIN contains two RNA-binding motifs, namely PIP1 and PIP2, and one CSD domain. PIPPIN functions as a nucleic acid binding regulatory factor and is believed to participate in brain maturation. More specifically, PIPPIN binds to the 3’-UTR ends of the mRNAs encoding Histone H1 and Histone H3.3. This interaction requires all of the PIPPIN domains to work in concert as one functional protein. In addition, PIPPIN can be sumoylated in a thyroid hormone (T3)-dependent manner. This suggests that PIPPIN modification in response to extracellular stimuli may modulate the regulation of protein synthesis.
