Staphylococcal enterotoxins represent a group of proteins, which are secreted by Staphylococcus aureus and cause staphylococcal food poisoning syndrome. The illness is characterised by high fever, hypotension, diarrhea, shock, and in some cases death. Their molecular masses range between 27 and 30 kDa. At present, seven enterotoxins are known, namely A, B, C1, C2, C3, D and E. Their amino acid sequences have been determined and it was shown that all are single chain polypeptides containing one disulfide bond formed by two half cystines located in the middle of the polypeptide chain, which form the so called cysteine loop. SEB is an extremely potent activator of T cells, stimulating the production and secretion of various cytokines which mediate many of the toxic effects of SEB.

Protocadherins are a large family of cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins that are involved in the establishment and maintenance of neuronal connections in the brain. There are three protocadherin gene clusters, designated alpha, beta and gamma, all of which contain multiple tandemly arranged genes. PCDH10 (protocadherin 10), also known as PCDH19 or OL-PCDH, is a 1,040 amino acid single-pass type I membrane protein that contains six cadherin domains and one transmembrane domain. Expressed at moderate levels in brain, ovary and testis and present at lower levels in all other tissues, PCDH10 functions as a calcium-dependent cell-adhesion protein that may function as a tumor suppressor. When underexpressed, PCDH10 is associated with the progression of various carcinomas, including gastric cancer.

The protein encoded by this gene is one of the highly conserved mini-chromosome maintenance proteins (MCM) that are essential for the initiation of eukaryotic genome replication. The hexameric protein complex formed by the MCM proteins is a key component of the pre-replication complex (pre_RC) and may be involved in the formation of replication forks and in the recruitment of other DNA replication related proteins. The MCM complex consisting of this protein and MCM2, 4 and 6 proteins possesses DNA helicase activity, and may act as a DNA unwinding enzyme. Cyclin D1-dependent kinase, CDK4, is found to associate with this protein, and may regulate the binding of this protein with the tumorsuppressor protein RB1/RB. Semaphorins are a large family, including both secreted and membrane associated proteins, many of which have been implicated as inhibitors or chemorepellents in axon pathfinding, fasciculation and branching, and target selection. All semaphorins possess a semaphorin (Sema) domain and a PSI domain (found in plexins, semaphorins and integrins) in the N-terminal extracellular portion. Additional sequence motifs C-terminal to the semaphorin domain allow classification into distinct subfamilies. Results demonstrate that transmembrane semaphorins, like the secreted ones, can act as repulsive axon guidance cues. This gene encodes a class 6 vertebrate transmembrane semaphorin that demonstrates alternative splicing. Several transcript variants have been identified and expression of the distinct encoded isoforms is thought to be regulated in a tissue- and development-dependent manner.

PCDHGA9 is a type I transmembrane receptor containing six cadherin motifs and is expressed in the central nervous system where it localizes to synapses. Members of the gamma cluster of protocadherins are essential for neuronal survival. There are two isoforms of PCDHGA9 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

Encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 5q21.3, PJA2 localizes to both endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus membranes. Participating in E2-dependent, E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase activity, PJA2 binds to a variety of E2s and interacts with ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes, such as UBE2D2, in vitro.

This MAb reacts specifically with heat shock protein HSP27 in human and monkey tissues and cell lines such as MCF-7. HSP27, also referred to as the Estrogen-Regulated 24K protein and HSP28, is one of several small heat shock proteins produced by all organisms studied. HSP27 synthesis is induced by elevated temperature, as well as by estrogen in hormone responsive cells. Interestingly, human HSP27 also shares greater than 50% homology with low molecular weight Drosophila HSPs and mammalian α-crystalline lens protein. Because of the estrogen responsive nature of HSP27, this protein has been studied extensively in human estrogen responsive tissues such as cervix, endometrium and breast tissue. Therefore HSP27 may be useful in classifying various hormone sensitive tumors.

Expressed at high levels in brain tissue, ZNRF2 is thought to function as an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase that may be involved in the establishment and maintenance of neuronal transmission and plasticity. Upon DNA damage, ZNRF2 is subject to phosphorylation, probably by ATR or ATM.

GPR120, a member of the rhodopsin family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), is a 377 amino acid protein which is expressed in the intestine. GPR120 is a receptor for unsaturated long-chain FFAs (free fatty acids). FFAs act as signaling molecules and are an important energy source. They also employ various physiological responses through their GPCRs. One such response occurs when dietary FFAs stimulate GPR120. This stimulation promotes the secretion of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) in vivo and in vitro. GLP-1 belongs to the class of molecules known as the incretins, which are associated with insulin secreted from the pancreas as a result of food intake. GLP-1 also inhibits glucagon and gastric acid secretion and gastric emptying. Consequently, the role of GPR120 in the secretion of GLP-1 is critical in the treatment of diabetes.

Role of NRIP has been implicated in cell growth and also in cervical and prostrate cancer, thus indicating a potential therapeutic intervention. Northern Blot analysis detects a high expression of NRIP in skeletal muscle and testis and low expression in heart, prostrate and adrenal gland.

The best characterised leucine-rich repeat family member is LRCH4, which is suggested to be involved in ligand binding in the brain, with expression observed primarily in the hippocampus. As a cell adhesion molecule and signal receptor, LRCH4 may play an important role in maintenance of hippocampus-dependent memories, with defects in the gene possibly contributing to a loss of long-term memory. The gene encoding LRCH3 maps to human chromosome 3, which spans 200 million base pairs and encodes between 1,100 and 1,500 genes. There are three isoforms of LRCH3 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.
