PSD 93 is believed to participate in the clustering of certain proteins, including N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and shaker-type potassium channels at the synaptic membrane. There are two principal modes of interaction between PSD 93 and other proteins. NMDA receptors and shaker-type potassium channels both share C-terminal sequence homology consisting of a threonine/serine-X-valine-COOH (T/SXV) motif. Other neuronal proteins that share this motif (beta 1 adrenergic receptor, some serotonin receptors, some sodium channel subunits, and additional potassium channel subunits) may interact with PSD 93 by binding to its PDZ domains. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), which lacks the T/SXV motif but which has its own PDZ domain, has been shown to associate with PSD 93 in vitro through a pseudo-homotypic PDZ-PDZ interaction.

The four core histones, H2A, H2B, H3, and H4, assemble into an octamer (2 molecules of each). Subsequently, 146 base pairs of DNA are wrapped around the octamer, forming a nucleosome, the basic subunit of chromatin. Histone modifications regulate DNA transcription, repair, recombination, and replication. The most commonly studied modifications are acetylation, phosphorylation, methylation, and ubiquitination. These modifications can alter local chromatin architecture, or recruit trans-acting factors that recognize specific histone modifications (the "histone code" hypothesis). Trimethylation of histone H3 on Lys9 (H3K9me3) is one of the most highly studied epigenetic marks. H3K9me3 functions in the repression of euchromatic genes, and in epigenetic control of heterochromatin assembly, most likely via acting as a recognition motif for the binding of chromatin-associated proteins, such as Swi6 or HP1Alpha/Beta. The enzymes responsible for H3K9me3 formation are SUV39H1 and SUV39H2.

MAT1A catalyzes a two-step reaction that involves the transfer of the adenosyl moiety of ATP to methionine to form S-adenosylmethionine and tripolyphosphate, which is subsequently cleaved to PPi and Pi. S-adenosylmethionine is the source of methyl groups for most biological methylations. MAT1A is found as a homotetramer (MAT I) or a homodimer (MAT III) whereas a third form, MAT II (gamma), is encoded by the MAT2A gene. Mutations in its gene are associated with methionine adenosyltransferase deficiency.This gne encodes methionine adenosyltransferase I (alpha isoform), which catalyzes the formation of S-adenosylmethionine from methionine and ATP. Methionine adenosyltransferase deficiency is caused by recessive and dominant mutations, the latter identified in autosomal dominant persistant hypermethioninemia.
