B lymphocytes marker CD20 is a non glycosylated protein with a molecular weight of 35 or 37 kDa depending on the degree of phosphorylation. Although not a member of the tetraspanin superfamily of cell surface receptors, it crosses the cell membrane four times. The CD20 antigen is present on human pre B lymphocytes and on B lymphocytes at all stages of maturation, except on plasma cells. Low level expression of the CD20 antigen has been detected on normal T lymphocytes. The CD20 molecule is involved in regulation of B cell differentiation, presumably via its reported function as a Ca++ channel subunit.

UCMA is a 138 amino acid secreted protein that is highly expressed in resting chrondrocytes in developing long bones and is thought to function in the early phase of chrondrocyte differentiation. A furin-like protease processes UCMA into an N-terminal 37 amino acid peptide and a C-terminal 74 amino acid peptide, which is referred to as Unique cartilage matrix-associated protein C-terminal fragment (Ucma-C). Introduction of recombinant Ucma-C interferes with osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts and primary osteoblasts. This suggests that Ucma may be involved in the negative regulation of osteogenic differentiation of osteochondrogenic precursor cells at the cartilage-bone interface and in peripheral zones of fetal cartilage.

Protein S (PROS) is a vitamin K-dependent plasma protein that inhibits blood clotting by serving as a cofactor for activated protein C (APC) and facilitates clearance of early apoptotic cells. In the plasma, circulating Protein S becomes inactive upon complexing with C4b-binding protein (C4BP); 60-70% of Protein S circulates in complex with C4BP. Calcium-dependent association of C4BP-Protein S with apoptotic cells influences the regulation of complement activation. Protein S has APC-independent anticoagulant activity through direct inhibition of prothrombin activation via interactions with Factor X A, Factor V A and phospholipids. Autosomal dominant Protein S deficiency (levels 15 to 37% of normal) correlates with severe recurrent venous thrombosis.

SHP1 is a member of the non receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase subfamily. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a monolayer simple epithelium in proximity to the outer surface of the retinal photoreceptor cells. Retinal pigment epithelium-specific protein (RPE65) is a 65 kDa protein belonging to the carotene dioxygenase family. This protein is important in 11-cis retinal production as well as in visual pigment regeneration. RPE65 is attached to the membrane by a lipid anchor when palmitoylated (membrane form) and soluble when unpalmitoylated. The soluble form of the protein binds vitamin A. Defects in RPE65 causes autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa and/or Leber congenital amaurosis type 2.
