Staphylococcal enterotoxins represent a group of proteins, which are secreted by Staphylococcus aureus and cause staphylococcal food poisoning syndrome. The illness is characterised by high fever, hypotension, diarrhea, shock, and in some cases death. Their molecular masses range between 27 and 30 kDa. At present, seven enterotoxins are known, namely A, B, C1, C2, C3, D and E. Their amino acid sequences have been determined and it was shown that all are single chain polypeptides containing one disulfide bond formed by two half cystines located in the middle of the polypeptide chain, which form the so called cysteine loop. SEB is an extremely potent activator of T cells, stimulating the production and secretion of various cytokines which mediate many of the toxic effects of SEB.

Both proteins are comprised of a Dbl homology (DH) domain with guanosine nucleotide exchange (GEF) activity exclusively directed towards Rho/Rac GTPases, a pleckstrin homology (PH) domain, a calponin-homology (CH) region, an acidic domain (AD) a zinc finger butterfly motif, two SH3 regions and one SH2 domain. GEF activity of RhoA family G proteins is induced by tyrosine phosphorylation in wild type VAV2, and is constitutively activated in N terminus deleted oncogene forms. Constitutive expression of a VAV2 oncoprotein may result in morphological alterations including highly enlarged cells in which karyokinesis and cytokinesis frequently are uncoupled.

PCDH10 (protocadherin 10), also known as PCDH19 or OL-PCDH, is a 1,040 amino acid single-pass type I membrane protein that contains six cadherin domains and one transmembrane domain. Expressed at moderate levels in brain, ovary and testis and present at lower levels in all other tissues, PCDH10 functions as a calcium-dependent cell-adhesion protein that may function as a tumor suppressor. When underexpressed, PCDH10 is associated with the progression of various carcinomas, including gastric cancer.

GPR120, a member of the rhodopsin family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), is a 377 amino acid protein which is expressed in the intestine. GPR120 is a receptor for unsaturated long-chain FFAs (free fatty acids). FFAs act as signaling molecules and are an important energy source. They also employ various physiological responses through their GPCRs. One such response occurs when dietary FFAs stimulate GPR120. This stimulation promotes the secretion of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) in vivo and in vitro. GLP-1 belongs to the class of molecules known as the incretins, which are associated with insulin secreted from the pancreas as a result of food intake. GLP-1 also inhibits glucagon and gastric acid secretion and gastric emptying. Consequently, the role of GPR120 in the secretion of GLP-1 is critical in the treatment of diabetes.

This interaction can lead to an increased replication time, and might have implications in final neural differentiation and apoptosis. NPDC-1 has been shown to colocalize with synaptic vesicle proteins: synaptophysin, synaptobrevin 2, and Rab3 GEP (Rab3 GTP/GDP exchange protein). One function of NPDC-1 is to regulate retinoic acid-mediated events by directly interacting with retinoid receptors. JMJD1B functions as a histone demethylase and, using iron as a cofactor, demethylates lysine-9 of Histone H3. This suggests that JMJD1B plays a central role in the histone code. The gene encoding human JMJD1B is located within the 5q region of the genome that is often deleted in myeloid leukemias and myelodysplasias. This implies that JMJD1B may function as a tumor suppressor of myeloid leukemia. Eptopic expression of JMJD1B exhibits growth suppressive activities, further supporting a role for JMJD1B in tumor suppression.
