PRKAB2 ans PRKAB1 are regulatory subunits of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit, and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. AMPK is an important energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status and plays a role in protecting cells from stresses that cause ATP depletion by switching off ATP-consuming biosynthetic pathways. AMPK is responsible for the regulation of fatty acid synthesis by phosphorylation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). It also regulates cholesterol synthesis via phosphorylation and inactivation of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) and hormone-sensitive lipase. PRKAB2 may be a positive regulator of AMPK activity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients with an inherited form of the disease carry mutations in the presenilin proteins (PSEN1;PSEN2) or the amyloid precursor protein (APP). These disease-linked mutations result in increased production of the longer form of amyloid-beta (main component of amyloid deposits found in AD brains). Presenilins are postulated to regulate APP processing through their effects on gamma-secretase, an enzyme that cleaves APP. Also, it is thought that the presenilins are involved in the cleavage of the Notch receptor, such that they either directly regulate gamma-secretase activity or themselves are protease enzymes. Three alternative splice variants of PSEN1 have been identified.

Two families of retinoid receptors have been identified.
