Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) is the terminal enzyme of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It is a multi-subunit enzyme complex that couples the transfer of electrons from cytochrome c to molecular oxygen and contributes to a proton electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. The complex consists of 13 mitochondrial- and nuclear-encoded subunits. The mitochondrially-encoded subunits perform the electron transfer of proton pumping activities. The functions of the nuclear-encoded subunits are unknown but they may play a role in the regulation and assembly of the complex. This gene encodes the nuclear-encoded subunit Va of the human mitochondrial respiratory chain enzyme. A pseudogene COX5AP1 has been found in chromosome 14q22. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

Component of the post-replicative DNA mismatch repair system (MMR). Heterodimerizes with MSH2 to form MutS beta which binds to DNA mismatches thereby initiating DNA repair. When bound, the MutS beta heterodimer bends the DNA helix and shields approximately 20 base pairs. MutS beta recognizes large insertion-deletion loops (IDL) up to 13 nucleotides long. After mismatch binding, forms a ternary complex with the MutL alpha heterodimer, which is thought to be responsible for directing the downstream MMR events, including strand discrimination, excision, and resynthesis.

Synaptotagmins (Syts) are a large gene family of synaptic vesicle integral membrane proteins. Syt functions as regulators of both exocytosis /endocytosis and is involved in neurotransmitter secretion from small secretory vesicles. 13 isoforms of Syt have been identified(SytI-XIII). SynaptotagminVI is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and/or Golgi like perinuclear compartment. It may be important for trafficking and calcium signaling as it is specially expressed in nonneuronal tissues. Also SytVI is present in the acrosomal region of mammalian spermatozoa. The cytosolic domain of SytVI can abrogate exocytosis by competing with the endogenous protein for essential interactions with the fusion machinery involved in a acrosomal exocytosis.

Hemogen is a nuclear protein that is expressed in hematopoietic precursor cells and can be detected in CD34+ and K-562 leukemia cell line. It is also expressed in bone marrow, testis, thymus and thyroid tumors, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, various leukemia cell lines, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) of patients with leukemia. Hemogen is down-regulated during megakaryocytic differentiation of K-562 cells by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) (at protein level). It can be up-regulated in normal PBMCs by mitogens.
