The DnaJ family is one of the largest of all the chaperone families and has evolved with diverse cellular localization and functions. The presence of the J domain defines a protein as a member of the DnaJ family. DnaJ heat shock induced proteins are from the bacterium Escherichia coli and are under the control of the htpR regulatory protein. The DnaJ proteins play a critical role in the HSP 70 chaperone machine by interacting with HSP 70 to stimulate ATP hydrolysis. The proteins contain cysteine rich regions that are composed of zinc fingers that form a peptide binding domain responsible for the chaperone function. DnaJ proteins are important mediators of proteolysis and are involved in the regulation of protein degradation, exocytosis and endocytosis. DnaJA2 (DnaJ homolog subfamily A member 2), also known as HIRA-interacting protein 4 or cell cycle progression restoration gene 3 protein, contains one CR-type zinc finger and is a co-chaperone of HSC 70.

The attachment of enveloped viruses to cells and the fusion of viral and cellular membranes are critical early events in the HIV viral infection. This process is mediated by envelope glycoproteins (gp) on the surface of the virus. The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein, gp160, is proteolytically cleaved into gp120 and gp41, which remain noncovalently associated with one another. gp120 is one of the proteins that forms the envelope of HIV. gp120 projects from the surface of HIV and binds to the CD4 molecule on helper T cells. gp120 has been a logical experimental HIV vaccine because the outer envelope is the first part of the virus that encounters antibody. gp41 is embedded in the outer envelope of HIV that anchors gp120. gp41 also plays a key role in HIV's infection of CD4+ T cells by facilitating the fusion of the viral and cell membranes. The nomenclature of the gp proteins describes their respective molecular masses (e.g., gp160, gp120, gp41).

Beta-tectorin is a 329 amino acid secreted protein that contains one zona pellucida (ZP) domain. While it may form homomeric filaments after self-association, Beta-tectorin may also form heteromeric filaments when it associates with ?tectorin. The presence of a hydrophobic C-terminus preceded by a potential cleavage site strongly suggests that tectorins are synthesized as glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked, membrane-bound precursors. Tectorins are targeted to the apical surface of the inner ear epithelia and proteolytically released into the extracellular compartment. Beta-tectorin is one of the major non-collagenous components of the tectorial membrane. The tectorial membrane is an extracellular matrix of the inner ear that covers the neuroepithelium of the cochlea and contacts the stereocilia bundles of specialized sensory hair cells. Sound induces movement of these hair cells relative to the tectorial membrane, deflects the stereocilia and leads to fluctuations in hair-cell membrane potential, transducing sound into electrical signals.

One proposed model is that the SH2 domain of v-Crk functions to activate c-Src kinase, which in turn phosphorylates p130 Cas.

The proteasome represents a large protein complex that exists inside all eukaryotes and archaea, and in some bacteria. The main function of proteasomes is to degrade unnecessary or damaged proteins by proteolysis. The most common form of the proteasome, known as the 26S Proteasome, contains one 20S Proteasome core particle structure and two 19S regulatory caps. The 20S Proteasome core is hollow and forms an enclosed cavity, where proteins are degraded, as well as openings at the two ends to allow the target protein to enter. The 20S Proteasome core particle contains many subunits, depending on the organism. All of the subunits fall into one of two types: alpha subunits, which are structural, serve as docking domains for the regulatory particles and exterior gates blocking unregulated access to the interior cavity; or beta subunits, which are predominantly catalytic. The outer two rings in the proteasome consist of seven ?subunits each, and the inner two rings each consist of seven beta subunits.

RBMX2 is a 322 amino acid member of the IST3 family that contains one RRM (RNA recognition motif) domain. The RBMX2 gene is intronless, conserved in chimpanzee, dog, cow, mouse, rat, zebrafish, fruit fly, mosquito, C.elegans, S.pombe, S.cerevisiae, K.lactis, E.gossypii, M.grisea, N.crassa, A.thaliana, rice and P.falciparum, and maps to human chromosome Xq25. The X and Y chromosomes are the human sex chromosomes. Chromosome X consists of about 153 million base pairs and nearly 1,000 genes. The combination of an X and Y chromosome lead to normal male development while two copies of X lead to normal female development. More than one copy of the X chromosome with a Y chromosome causes Klinefelter's syndrome. A single copy of X alone leads to Turner's syndrome. More than 2 copies of the X chromosome, in the absence of a Y chromosome, is known as Triple X syndrome. Color blindness, hemophilia, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are well known X chromosome-linked conditions that affect males more frequently as males carry a single X chromosome.

Members of the suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) family of proteins contain C-terminal regions of homology called the SOCS box, which serves to couple SOCS proteins and their binding partners with the Elongin B and C complex. Several other families of proteins also contain SOCS boxes, but differ from the SOCS proteins in the type of domain they contain upstream of the SOCS box. The largest family of SOCS box-containing proteins is the ankyrin repeat and SOCS box-containing (ASB) protein family. Members of the ASB family include ASB-1 through ASB-18 and are involved in a variety of biological processes. ASB-17 is a 295 amino acid member of this family. ASB-17 contains one ankyrin repeat and one SOCS box domain. ASB-17 is thought to be a substrate-recognition subunit of a SCF-like ECS (Elongin-Cullin-SOCS-box protein) E3 ubiquitin protein ligase complex. This complex mediates the ubiquitination of target proteins and their subsequent proteasomal degradation.
