Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and help in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where this ratio is reversed. Another difference between mammalian mitoribosomes and prokaryotic ribosomes is that the latter contain a 5S rRNA. Among different species, the proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly in sequence, and sometimes in biochemical properties, which prevents easy recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 5q.

Novel nuclear protein 1 (NNP-1), also known as RRP1-like protein or Nucleolar protein Nop52, is a 461 amino acid protein belonging to the RRP1 family. Localized to the nucleolus, NNP-1 has simian virus 40-type and bipartite nuclear localization signals and four coiled-coil domains within its C-terminal region. NNP-1 has been found to play an important role in the generation of 28S rRNA in the late processing steps of ribosome biogenesis. At the end of mitosis, nucleolar proteins assemble in a sequential order during the rebuilding of the nucleolus. NNP-1 assembles after Fibrillarin and C23, and simultaneously with B23 and POP1 in the prenucleolar body pathway.

CD3, also known as T3, is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily that plays a role in antigen recognition, signal transduction, and T cell activation. It is expressed, typically at high levels, on peripheral T cells and majority of T cell neoplasms. Thymocytes express CD3 at different level on the cell surface in the course of differentiation and, in cortical thymus, CD3 is predominantly Intracytoplasmic. Mitoferrin 2, also known as MRS3/4 (mitochondrial RNA-splicing protein 3/4 homolog), mitochondrial iron transporter 2, NPD016, MRS4L or SLC25A28 (solute carrier family 25 member 28), is a 364 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein of the mitochondrial inner membrane that mediates iron uptake. Mitoferrin 2 is thought to play a role in heme synthesis of hemoproteins and iron-sulfur cluster assembly. Ubiquitously expressed, Mitoferrin 2 is found at high levels in skeletal muscle, heart, placenta, kidney, lung, liver, brain and pancreas. Mitoferrin 2 is a member of the mitochondrial carrier family and undergoes alternative splicing events to produce four isoforms. Mitoferrin 2 contains three solcar repeats and is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 10q24.2.
