Defects in the gene encoding Maspardin are the result of hereditary spastic paraplegia autosomal recessive type 21 (also designated Mast syndrome), an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a slow, gradual, progressive weakness and spasticity of the lower limbs.
