Overexpression of apoL-IV is associated with schizophrenia, suggesting that apoL-IV may play a role in the pathogenesis of neural disorders.

The preB cell receptor is composed of a membrane-bound Ig mu heavy chain in association with a heterodimeric surrogate light chain. This gene encodes one of the surrogate light chain subunits and is a member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily. This gene does not undergo rearrangement. Mutations in this gene can result in B cell deficiency and agammaglobulinemia, an autosomal recessive disease in which few or no gamma globulins or are made. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

This gene encodes a DNA topoisomerase, an enzyme that controls and alters the topologic states of DNA during transcription. This nuclear enzyme is involved in processes such as chromosome condensation, chromatid separation, and the relief of torsional stress that occurs during DNA transcription and replication. It catalyzes the transient breaking and rejoining of two strands of duplex DNA which allows the strands to pass through one another, thus altering the topology of DNA. Two forms of this enzyme exist as likely products of a gene duplication event. The gene encoding this form, alpha, is localized to chromsome 17 and the beta gene is localized to chromosome 3. The gene encoding this enzyme functions as the target for several anticancer agents and a variety of mutations in this gene have been associated with the development of drug resistance. Reduced activity of this enzyme may also play a role in ataxia-telangiectasia.

There are a number of conditions related to an unsual number and combination of sex chromosomes being inherited. More than one copy of the X chromosome with a Y chromosome causes Klinefelter's syndrome. A single copy of X alone leads to Turner's syndrome. More than 2 copies of the X chromosome, in the absence of a Y chromosome, is known as Triple X syndrome. Color blindness, hemophilia, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are well known X chromosome-linked conditions which affect males more frequently as males carry a single X chromosome. The FAM70A gene product has been provisionally designated FAM70A pending further characterization.

Additional sequence motifs C-terminal to the semaphorin domain allow classification into distinct subfamilies. Results demonstrate that transmembrane semaphorins, like the secreted ones, can act as repulsive axon guidance cues. This gene encodes a class 6 vertebrate transmembrane semaphorin that demonstrates alternative splicing. Several transcript variants have been identified and expression of the distinct encoded isoforms is thought to be regulated in a tissue- and development-dependent manner. Originally thought to only have GTPase activity, Obg-related GTPase family members have been shown to also have ATPase activity. In Homo sapians, GTPBP9 exhibits a preference for binding ATP over GTP, with GTP binding occuring only at high nucleotide concentration. One cause for ATP affinity and GTP discrimination is thought to be a substitution of glutamine for a hydrophobic amino acid in Obg-related family members; this is the same substitution that inactivates Ras-like GTPases. GTPBP9 contains a C-terminal TGS domain that binds to ligands and an N-terminal G domain which binds nucleotides. GTPBP9 is expressed as three isoforms produced by alternative splicing.
