Hemogen is a 484 amino acid protein encoded by the human gene HEMGN. Hemogen is a nuclear protein that is expressed in hematopoietic precursor cells and can be detected in CD34+ and K-562 leukemia cell line. It is also expressed in bone marrow, testis, thymus and thyroid tumors, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, various leukemia cell lines, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) of patients with leukemia. Hemogen is down-regulated during megakaryocytic differentiation of K-562 cells by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) (at protein level). It can be up-regulated in normal PBMCs by mitogens.

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI or MTCO1) is one of three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encoded subunits (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) of respiratory Complex IV. Complex IV is located within the mitochondrial inner membrane and is the third and final enzyme of the electron transport chain of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Complex IV is composed of 13 polypeptides. Subunits I, II, and III (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) are encoded by mtDNA while subunits IV, Va, Vb, VIa, VIb, VIc, VIIa, VIIb, VIIc, and VIII are nuclear encoded. Mammalian MTCO1 has 12 membrane-spanning alpha-helices (I to XII).

GIOT-1 is a 563 amino acid protein belonging to the Krüppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family. Localized to the nucleus, GIOT-1 is widely expressed in tissues, with highest levels in liver, kidney, small intestine, pancreas and thymus. GIOT-1 contains 12 C2H2-type zinc fincers and one KRAB domain. Because the KRAB domain functions as a transcriptional repressor when attached to the template DNA, GIOT-1 is thought to be involved in transcriptional regulation. The gene encoding GIOT-1 is localized to chromosome 19q13.12 and two isoforms of GIOT-1 exist as a result of alternative splicing events.

This gene is a member of the type II keratin family clustered on the long arm of chromosome 12. Type I and type II keratins heteropolymerize to form intermediate-sized filaments in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. The product of this gene typically dimerizes with keratin 18 to form an intermediate filament in simple single-layered epithelial cells. This protein plays a role in maintaining cellular structural integrity and also functions in signal transduction and cellular differentiation. Mutations in this gene cause cryptogenic cirrhosis. Human 15-LO-2 has a molecular mass of approximately 76 kDa and exhibits approximately 40% identity to the reticulocyte 15-LO-1.2,3 expression of 15-LO-2 appears to be restricted to prostate, lung, skin, and cornea and may play a role in the normal development of these tissues.

Profilin 1 is a ubiquitous actin monomer-binding protein involved in actin polymerization in response to extracellular signals. Three profilin genes have been identified: profilin 1, 2, and 3. Profilin 1 is the most ubiquitous and abundant, and is highly expressed throughout development and adulthood inmost tissues including brain. Profilin 2 is the neuronal specific isoform and profilin 3 is a testis specific isoform. Profilins of eukaryotic cells are small (12-15 kDa) cytoplasmic proteins that bind to actin monomers, polyphosphoinositides and polymers of L-proline. Profilins were shown to be important for normal cell proliferation, differentiation and motility. Deletion of profilin 1 gene leads to an embryonic lethal phenotype.
