It has been postulated to play a role in mitogenic signaling.

SAA4 is a constitutively expressed protein belonging to the SAA family. It is a major acute phase reactant and an apolipoprotein of the HDL complex. The serum amyloid A (SAA) superfamily comprises a number of differentially expressed genes with a high degree of homology in mammalian species. SAA4, an apolipoprotein constitutively expressed only in humans and mice, is associated almost entirely with lipoproteins of the high density range. Its physiological function is unknown and its serum concentration has no relationship with those of other major apolipoproteins. The presence of SAA4 mRNA and protein in macrophage derived foam cells of coronary and carotid arteries suggested a specific role of human SAA4 during inflammation including atherosclerosis.

UCMA is a 138 amino acid secreted protein that is highly expressed in resting chrondrocytes in developing long bones and is thought to function in the early phase of chrondrocyte differentiation. A furin-like protease processes UCMA into an N-terminal 37 amino acid peptide and a C-terminal 74 amino acid peptide, which is referred to as Unique cartilage matrix-associated protein C-terminal fragment (Ucma-C). Introduction of recombinant Ucma-C interferes with osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts and primary osteoblasts. This suggests that Ucma may be involved in the negative regulation of osteogenic differentiation of osteochondrogenic precursor cells at the cartilage-bone interface and in peripheral zones of fetal cartilage.

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the INK4 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. This protein has been shown to form a stable complex with CDK4 or CDK6, and prevent the activation of the CDK kinases, thus function as a cell growth regulator that controls cell cycle G1 progression. The abundance of the transcript of this gene was found to oscillate in a cell-cycle dependent manner with the lowest expression at mid G1 and a maximal expression during S phase. The negative regulation of the cell cycle involved in this protein was shown to participate in repressing neuronal proliferation, as well as spermatogenesis. Cell cycle progression is controlled in part by a family of cyclin proteins and cyclin dependent kinases (Cdks). Cdk proteins work in concert with the cyclins to phosphorylate key substrates involved in each phase of cell cycle progression. Specifically, Cdk2 interacts with Cyclins A, B1, B3, D, or E to control cell cycle progression. The Cyclin-dependent kinase 2-interacting protein (CINP) interacts with components of the replication complex and Cdk2 and Cdc7, thereby providing a functional and physical link between Cdk2 and Cdc7 during firing of the origins of replication. However, CINP is phopshorylated by Cdc7, but not by Cdk2. CINP also interacts with ATR-interacting protein and regulates ATR-dependent signaling, resistance to replication stress and G2 checkpoint integrity.
