EphA3 is a member of the Ephrin (Eph) family. The Ephrins and Eph-related receptors comprise the largest subfamily of receptor protein-tyrosine kinases and have been implicated in mediating developmental events, especially in the nervous system and in erythropoiesis. Based on their structures and sequence relationships, ephrins are divided into the Ephrin A (EphA) class, which are anchored to the membrane by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage, and the Ephrin B (EphB) class, which are transmembrane proteins. Receptors in the EPH subfamily typically have a single kinase domain and an extracellular region containing a Cys-rich domain and 2 fibronectin type III repeats.

This intronless gene encodes a 70kDa heat shock protein which is a member of the heat shock protein 70 family. In conjuction with other heat shock proteins, this protein stabilizes existing proteins against aggregation and mediates the folding of newly translated proteins in the cytosol and in organelles. It is also involved in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway through interaction with the AU-rich element RNA-binding protein 1. FNDC1 is moderately expressed in skeletal muscle, pancreas, heart, kidney, spinal cord, ovary and lung. Expression of FNDC1 is induced in response to hypoxia in ventricular cardiomyocytes. Since FNDC1 interacts with G∫ and G©, it is likely that FNDC1 is an activator for G-protein signaling. Though normally absent in healthy skin, FNDC1 expression is induced by TGF-beta signaling in skin tumors and psoriasis. There are two isoforms of FNDC1 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

Biliverdin reductase A (BLVRA), also designated biliverdin-IX Alpha-reductase, belongs to the GFO/iIDH/MocA family and the biliverdin reductase subfamily. The gene that encodes this cytoplasmic protein maps to chromosome 7p14-cen. BLVRA reduces biliverdin IX ?(the ?methene bridge of the open tetrapyrrole) to bilirubin with the concomitant oxidation of an NADH or NADPH cofactor (bilirubin + NADP+ = biliverdin + NADPH).
