Calpain 12 was first described in the mouse, most strongly in the skin, and maps to mouse chromosome 7. Isoforms differ in the carboxyterminal ends, ending with aberrant domain III and lacking domain IV. Domains in the large subunit include the amino terminal domain I, the proteinase domain II, domain III, and the EF hand domain IV, making Calpain 12 most similar to calpains 1 and 2.

KCNT2 is a 1,135 amino acid multi-pass transmembrane protein belonging to the potassium channel family (calcium-activated subfamily) of proteins. KCNT2 produces rapidly activating outward rectifier potassium currents in reponse to high intracellular sodium and chloride levels. Its channel activity is inhibited by ATP, inhalation anesthetics, such as isoflourane, and upon stimulation of G-protein coupled receptors, such as mAChR M1 and GluR-1. There are four isoforms of KCNT2 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

In hematoxylin-eosin staining (H&E), the most widely used histological staining technique, nuclear staining is achieved using ready-to-use staining solutions, such as Mayer’s hemalum solution or Hematoxylin solution modified according to Gill III. Hemidesmosomes are structures which link the basal lamina to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton. An important functional component of hemidesmosomes is the integrin beta-4 subunit (ITGB4), a protein containing two fibronectin type III domains. The protein encoded by Intergrin beta 4 binding protein binds to the fibronectin type III domains of ITGB4 and may help link ITGB4 to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton. The encoded protein, which is insoluble and found both in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm, can function as a translation initiation factor and prevent the association of the 40S and 60S ribosomal subunits. Multiple transcript variants encoding several different isoforms have been found for this gene.
