RDH13, also known as all-trans and 9-cis retinol dehydrogenase 13 or SDR7C3, is a 331 amino acid mitochondrial protein belonging to the short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (SDR) family. Widely expressed, mostly in eye, pancreas, placenta and lung, RDH13 localises on the outer side of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Related to microsomal retinoid oxidoreductase RDH11, RDH13 is considered to be a major enzyme among the RDH family of proteins. Catalytically active, RDH13 recognises retinoids as substrates and may function in retinoic acid production. RDH13 may function to protect the mitochondria against oxidative stress. Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) type 3, an inherited autosomal recessive retinal disease, has been associated with defects of RDH13. LCA represents the most common genetic cause of congenital visual impairment in infants and children.

Recognizes a 77-85 kDa protein, identified as cellular or tissue transglutaminase II (TGase II). Transglutaminases are enzymes that catalyze the crosslinking of proteins by epsilon-gamma glutamyl lysine isopeptide bonds. While the primary structure of transglutaminases is not conserved, they all have the same amino acid sequence at their active sites and their activity is calcium-dependent. The protein encoded by this gene acts as a monomer, is induced by retinoic acid, and appears to be involved in apoptosis. Finally, the encoded protein is the autoantigen implicated in celiac disease. The identification of transglutaminase as the main antigen of endomysium antibodies allows a new diagnostic approach to celiac disease (CD), a genetic, immunologically mediated small bowel enteropathy that causes malabsorption. TGase II is implicated in programmed cell death, signal transduction, drug-resistance, cell growth, endocytosis, insulin secretion, cell adhesion, cataract formation, and wound healing.

The function of NAP1L2 is not clearly defined although evidence suggests that NAP1L2 influences histone acetylation and therefore may play a significant role in regulating transcription in developing neurons.

A gene on chromosome 20q13.1 encodes Eya2 (eyes absent). EYA2 is one of four members of the eyes absent family. A 271 amino acid domain at the carboxy-terminal is highly conserved amongst the members of the eyes absent family, while the PST (proline-serive-threonin)-rich amino-terminal is highly divergent. EYA2 is expressed relatively late in development in the cytoplasm of extensor tendons and ligaments of the phalangeal elements of the limb, cranial placodes, branchial arches, central nervous system, and the developing eye. Pax3 induces the expression of Eya2 in a cascade that is necessary and sufficient for myogenesis. EYA2, like EYA1, acts as a transcriptional activator in connective tissue patterning through its PST domain, which functions as a transactivation domain. EYA2 is translocated to the nucleus by Six proteins, which interact through their domain and homeodomain with EYA2. EYA2 carboxy-terminal interacts with the G Alpha z and G Alphai 2 proteins.
