The RING-type zinc finger motif is present in a number of viral and eukaryotic proteins and is made of a conserved cysteine-rich domain that is able to bind two zinc atoms. Proteins that contain this conserved domain are generally involved in the ubiquitination pathway of protein degradation. SH3RF2 (SH3 domain containing ring finger 2), also known as RNF158, is a 729 amino acid protein with one RING-type zinc finger domain and three SH3 domains. Via its RING-type zinc finger domain, SH3RF2 binds an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme. This suggests that SH3RF2 functions as an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase that accepts a ubiquitin residue from an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme and immediately transfers that residue to a protein that is targeted for degradation. Due to alternative splicing events, SH3RF2 is expressed as two different isoforms.

The ankyrin repeat and SOCS box containing (ASB) protein family is comprised of members which each contain "SOCS boxes" but differ from other families of protein in the motifs they contain upstream of the SOCS box. SOCS boxes are carboxy terminal regions of homology found in the suppressor of cytokine signaling family of proteins. The box region is thought to be the point of interaction between SOCS proteins and E3 ubiquitin ligases. The SOCS box serves to couple suppressor of cytokine signalling (SOCS) proteins and their binding partners with the elongin B and C complex, possibly targeting them for degradation. The gene is induced by all trans retinoic acid. In myeloid leukemia cells, the expression of this encoded protein has been shown to induce growth inhibition and chromatin condensation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described for this gene but their full length sequences are not known.

UBE2H, also known as UBC8, UBCH, UBCH2 or E2-20K, is a 183 amino acid protein involved in ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. Ubiquitination is an important mechanism through which three classes of enzymes act in concert to target short-lived or abnormal proteins for destruction. The three classes of enzymes involved in ubiquitination are the ubiquitin-activating enzymes (E1s), the ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2s) and the ubiquitin-protein ligases (E3s). One of several members of the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family, UBE2H functions as an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme that acts to catalyze the covalent attachment of ubiquitin residues to various proteins, including Histone H2A. UBE2H shares 100% identity with its mouse counterpart and 98% identity with its frog and zebrafish homologs, suggesting a conserved function between species. The ring finger protein (RNF) family includes any protein containing the signature RING finger motif. RNF8 is a ubiquitously expressed nuclear RING finger protein that acts as an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase. It is required for the ubiquitination of some nuclear proteins and promotes their subsequent degradation. The heterodimeric ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme UBC13 interacts with RNF8, and they co-localize in the nucleus. RNF8 may regulate mediation of UBC13 polyubiquitylation by elongating the ubiquitin chains. RNF8 also binds to Retinoid X receptor alpha (RXR?, a member of the steroid hormone receptor superfamily.
