Protein kinases are enzymes that transfer a phosphate group from a phosphate donor onto an acceptor amino acid in a substrate protein. By this basic mechanism, protein kinases mediate most of the signal transduction in eukaryotic cells, regulating cellular metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement and cell movement, apoptosis, and differentiation. The protein kinase family is one of the largest families of proteins in eukaryotes, classified in 8 major groups based on sequence comparison of their tyrosine (PTK) or serine/threonine (STK) kinase catalytic domains. Epidermal Growth factor receptor (EGFR) is the prototype member of the type 1 receptor tyrosine kinases. EGFR overexpression in tumors indicates poor prognosis and is observed in tumors of the head and neck, brain, bladder, stomach, breast, lung, endometrium, cervix, vulva, ovary, esophagus, stomach and in squamous cell carcinoma.

The RING-type zinc finger motif is present in a number of viral and eukaryotic proteins and is made of a conserved cysteine-rich domain that is able to bind two zinc atoms. Proteins that contain this conserved domain are generally involved in the ubiquitination pathway of protein degradation. RNF32 (RING finger protein 32), also known as HSD15 or FKSG33, is a 362 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that contains one IQ domain and two RING-type zinc fingers. Highly expressed in testis with lower expression levels in ovary tissue, RNF32 is thought to play a role in spermatogenesis, specifically contributing to the growth and maturation of round spermatids. Six isoforms of RNF32 exist due to alternative splicing events.

PNS-tau is expressed in the peripheral nervous system while the others are expressed in the central nervous system.

The ALS2 gene encodes the Alsin protein. Alsin acts as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Rab5, a modulator of the endocytic pathway. Alsin is a cytosolic protein that is associated with small, punctate membrane structures. Therefore, Alsin may mediate membrane transport events, potentially linking endocytic processes and actin cytoskeleton remodeling. The ALS2 C-terminal-like protein (ALS2CL) also modulates Rab 5 activity.

MLC1 is a 377 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein that may serve as a non-selective neuronal cation channel in brain. Mutations in the gene encoding MLC1 is the cause of megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts, also known as van der Knaap disease, a rare syndrome characterized early in life by progressive brain destruction causing mental retardation and incoordination. Single nucleotide polymorphisms within the MLC1 gene may be associated with periodic catatonia, but there seems to be conflicting evidence on whether or not the gene is implicated in general schizophrenia.

Nuclear pore complex protein Nup107 (Nucleoporin Nup107) is an essential part of the nuclear pore complex which is composed of Nup133, Nup160, Nup107 and Nup96. Nup107 is active in assembling peripheral proteins into this complex. The protein, located on both the nuclear and cytoplasmic sides of the pore, is important in RNA export.

G protein-coupled receptor 17, GPR17, also known as uracil nucleotide/cysteinyl leukotriene receptor or P2Y-like receptor (P2YL), is a 367 amino acid member of the G-protein coupled receptor 1 family of proteins. While GPR17 is expressed in kidney, heart and umbilical vein endothelial cells, it is expressed in the highest levels in the brain. Upon brain injury, the extracellular concentrations of nucleotides and cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLTs), two families of endogenous signaling molecules, increase significantly at the site of damage. In some neurons, GPR17, a membrane receptor for uracil nucleotide and CysLTs, is upregulated as well, infiltrating the lesioned area. GPR17 is thought to play a role in mediating neuronal death, remodeling brain circuitries by microglia and initiating remyelination in damaged neurons. Two named isoforms of GPR17 exist as a result of alternative splicing events.
