Complex IV is composed of 13 polypeptides. Subunits I, II, and III (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) are encoded by mtDNA while subunits IV, Va, Vb, VIa, VIb, VIc, VIIa, VIIb, VIIc, and VIII are nuclear encoded. Hemogen is a nuclear protein that is expressed in hematopoietic precursor cells and can be detected in CD34+ and K-562 leukemia cell line. It is also expressed in bone marrow, testis, thymus and thyroid tumors, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, various leukemia cell lines, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) of patients with leukemia. Hemogen is down-regulated during megakaryocytic differentiation of K-562 cells by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) (at protein level). It can be up-regulated in normal PBMCs by mitogens.

The Annexins constitute a family of structurally-related, relatively abundant proteins that exhibit Ca2+-dependent binding to phospholipids. Annexins function in multiple aspects of cell biology including regulation of membrane trafficking, transmembrane channel activity, inhibition of phospholipase A2, inhibition of coagulation and mediation of cell-matrix interactions. Annexin A13 is considered the original progenitor of the 12 members of vertebrate Annexins. The expression of Annexin A13 is highly tissue-specific, being expressed only in intestinal and kidney epithelial cells. This expression is associated with a highly differentiated intracellular transport function. Two alternative splicing isoforms of Annexin A13 exist, both of which bind to rafts.

Lymphotactin is a chemokine-like molecule produced selectively, if not exclusively, by activated CD8+ T cells (1). Lymphotactin is a C-type member of the chemokine superfamily, but retains only the 2nd and 4th of the four cysteine residues conserved in other chemokines (3,4). In normal tissues, lymphotactin is expressed at high levels in spleen, thymus, small intestine, and peripheral blood leukocytes, as well as at low levels in lung, prostate, and ovary (2). Lymphotactin is chemotactic for CD4+ and CD8+ T cells but not for monocytes, and induces a rise in intracellular calcium in peripheral blood lymphocytes (1). The specific receptor for lymphotactin is XCR1, a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family (5). The gene which encodes lymphotactin maps to human chromosome 1q23 (1,2).
