Reacts with a common epitope of human major histocompatibility (MHC) class II antigens, HLA-DR and DP. Human MHC class II antigens are transmembrane glycoproteins composed of an chain (36 kDa) and a chain (27 kDa). They are expressed primarily on antigen presenting cells such as B lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, and thymic epithelial cells and are also present on activated T lymphocytes. Human MHC class II genes are located in the HLA-D region that encodes at least six and ten chain genes. Three loci, DR, DQ and DP, encode the major expressed products of the human class II region. The human MHC class II molecules bind intracellularly processed peptides and present them to T-helper cells. They, therefore, have a critical role in the initiation of the immune response. It has been shown that some autoimmune diseases are associated with certain class II alleles.

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the chromogranin/secretogranin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins. It is found in secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. This gene product is a precursor to three biologically active peptides; vasostatin, pancreastatin, and parastatin. These peptides act as autocrine or paracrine negative modulators of the neuroendocrine system. Other peptides, including chromostatin, beta-granin, WE-14 and GE-25, are also derived from the full-length protein. However, biological activities for these molecules have not been shown. Proteins of the TCF subfamily form a ternary complex by binding to the the serum response factor and the serum response element in the promoter of the c-fos proto-oncogene. This gene produces multiple isoforms by using alternative translational start codons and by alternative splicing. Related pseudogenes have been identified on chromosomes 7 and 14. PKMYT1 is a member of the serine/threonine protein kinase family. It preferentially phosphorylates and inactivates cell division cycle 2 protein (cdc2), and thus acts as a negative regulator of entry into mitosis (G2 to M transition). It mediates phosphorylation of cdc2 predominantly on 'Thr-14' and is also involved in Golgi fragmentation. It may be involved in phosphorylation of cdc2 on 'Tyr-15' to a lesser degree, however tyrosine kinase activity is unclear and may be indirect. It may be a downstream target of Notch signaling pathway during eye development. PKMYT1 is negatively regulated by hyperphosphorylation during mitosis.

The Annexins are a family of structurally similar proteins. Annexins bind to phospholipids and may be involved in regulation of membrane transport, membrane channel activity, and interaction of the cell membrane with the extracellular matrix. Annexin A7 is a member of the annexin family of calcium dependent phospholipid binding proteins. The Annexin A7 gene contains 14 exons and spans approximately 34 kb of DNA. Structural analysis of the protein suggests that Annexin A7 is a membrane binding protein with diverse properties including voltage sensitive calcium channel activity, ion selectivity and membrane fusion.

This MAb reacts with a wide variety of simple epithelia. It does not react with stratified squamous epithelia. It reacts with epithelial tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, breast, pancreas, ovary, and thyroid. Cytokeratin 18, which belongs to the type A (acidic) subfamily of low molecular weight keratins, exists in combination with cytokeratin 8. It is reported that tissues from gastrointestinal tract are positive for both cytokeratin 8 and 18 but do not contain cytokeratin 14. Tissues from gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and urogenital tract, as well as endocrine and exocrine tissues and mesothelial cells are positive for cytokeratin 18.
