Streptavidin is biotin-binding protein that was originally isolated from Streptomyces avidinii. In contrast to avidin, streptavidin has no carbohydrate and has a mildly acidic pI of 5. Streptavidin products use a recombinant form of streptavidin having a mass of 53,000 daltons and a near-neutral pI. Streptavidin is a tetrameric protein, with each subunit binding one molecule of biotin with affinity similar to that of avidin. Guanidinium chloride will dissociate avidin and streptavidin into subunits, but streptavidin is more resistant to dissociation.

This activation is catalyzed by guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs). RIC-8A (resistance to inhibitors of cholinesterase 8 homolog A), also known as RIC8 or Synembryn-A, is a 530 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that can activate several G-alpha proteins, including G?i-1, G?q and G?o. Functioning as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor, RIC-8A binds to GDP-associated substrates and exchanges bound GDP for free GTP. Via its ability to stimulate protein function, RIC-8A plays a role in regulating mitotic movement and may be involved in receptor-mediated ERK activation. RIC-8A is expressed as three isoforms due to alternative splicing events.

This gene encodes a cell surface tyrosine kinase receptor for members of the platelet-derived growth factor family. These growth factors are mitogens for cells of mesenchymal origin. The identity of the growth factor bound to a receptor monomer determines whether the functional receptor is a homodimer or a heterodimer, composed of both platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha and beta polypeptides. This gene is flanked on chromosome 5 by the genes for granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and macrophage-colony stimulating factor receptor; all three genes may be implicated in the 5-q syndrome. A translocation between chromosomes 5 and 12, that fuses this gene to that of the translocation, ETV6, leukemia gene, results in chronic myeloproliferative disorder with eosinophilia. The sterile alpha motif (SAM) domain is a 70 residue structure found in a large number of proteins involved in diverse processes present throughout the eukaryotes. The SAM domain is known to bind RNA and is arranged in a small five-helix bundle with two large interfaces. SAMD7 (Sterile alpha motif domain-containing protein 7), is a 446 amino acid protein encoded by the SAMD7 gene which maps to human chromosome 3. Chromosome 3 is made up of about 214 million bases encoding over 1,100 genes, including a chemokine receptor (CKR) gene cluster and a variety of human cancer-related gene loci. Key tumor suppressing genes on chromosome 3 include those that encode the apoptosis mediator RASSF1, the cell migration regulator HYAL1 and the angiogenesis suppressor SEMA3B. Marfan Syndrome, porphyria, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease are a few of the numerous genetic diseases associated with chromosome 3.

FAIM1 (or Fas Apoptotic Inhibitory Molecule 1) is a recently discovered negative regulator of apoptosis. FAIM1 has no significant regions of homology to other gene products that modulate Fas killing. It plays a role as an inducible effector molecule that mediates Fas resistance produced by surface Ig engagement in B cells. Overexpression of FAIM1 diminishes sensitivity to Fas mediated apoptosis of B and non B cell lines. FAIM1 is highly evolutionarily conserved and is widely expressed in murine tissues, suggesting that FAIM1 plays an important role in cellular physiology.
