This gene encodes a member of the microtubule affinity-regulating kinase family. These protein kinases phosphorylate microtubule-associated proteins and regulate the transition between stable and dynamic microtubules. The encoded protein is associated with the centrosome throughout mitosis and may be involved in cell cycle control. Expression of this gene is a potential marker for cancer, and the encoded protein may also play a role in Alzheimer's disease. Pseudogenes of this gene are located on both the short and long arm of chromosome 3. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene. The U-box domain is a modified RING finger motif that has been implicated in the ubiquitin/proteasome system. The ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme 7-interacting protein 5 (UIP5), also designated U-box domain-containing protein 5 or RING finger protein 37, contains 1 RING-type zinc finger and 1 U-box domain. UIP5 has been shown to interact with UBCH7, an enzyme that mediates selective degradation of abnormal proteins. The gene encoding UIP5 maps to chromosome 20, which houses over 600 genes, some of which are associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, ring chromosome 20 epilepsy syndrome and Alagille syndrome. Additionally, chromosome 20 contains a region with numerous genes which are thought important for seminal production and may be potential targets for male contraception.

Complexin 1 and Complexin 2, also designated Synaphin 1 and Synaphin 2, contain an a-helical middle domain of approximately 58 amino acids. Complexin 1 and Complexin 2 are expressed in presynaptic terminals of inhibitory and excitatory hippocampal neurons, respectively, and in cytoplasmic pools during early stages of development. Complexins promote SNARE (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors) precomplex formation by binding to synaxin with its a-helical domain. Complexins are important regulators of transmitter release at a late step in calcium dependent neurotransmitter release or immediately after the calcium-triggering step of fast synchronous transmitter release and preceding vesicle fusion. Neurons lacking complexins show reduced transmitter release efficiency due to decreased calcium sensitivity of the synaptic secretion process. Complexin 2 may play a role in LTP (long term potentiation) following tetanic stimulation. A progressive loss of Complexin 2 occurs in the brains of mice carrying the Huntington disease mutation, an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder. Changes in the neurotransmitter release might contribute to the motor, emotional and cognitive dysfunctions seen in these mice.

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat. Novel influenza virus strains caused by genetic drift and viral recombination emerge periodically to which humans have little or no immunity, resulting in devastating pandemics. Influenza A can exist in a variety of animals; however it is in birds that all subtypes can be found. These subtypes are classified based on the combination of the virus coat glycoproteins hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtypes. During 1997, an H5N1 avian influenza virus was determined to be the cause of death in 6 of 18 infected patients in Hong Kong. There was some evidence of human to human spread of this virus, but it is thought that the transmission efficiency was fairly low. HA interacts with cell surface proteins containing oligosaccharides with terminal sialyl residues. Virus isolated from a human infected with the H5N1 strain in 1997 could bind to oligosaccharides from human as well as avian sources, indicating its species jumping ability.Influenza A Virus [A/California/04/2009(H1N1)]

BAIAP2L2 (Brain-specific angiogenesis inhibitor 1-associated protein 2-like protein 2) is a 529 amino acid protein containing an SH3 domain, suggesting that it may function as an adaptor protein. BAIAP2L2 also contains an IMD (IRSp53/MIM) domain, which enables the protein to bind to and bundle Actin filaments, as well as bind to membranes and interact with Rac GTPase. There are two named isoforms of BAIAP2L2 which are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

NF-1, also designated CTF, consists of a family of CCAAT box binding proteins that stimulate DNA replication and activate transcription. Analysis of human NF-1 messenger RNA has revealed two forms of the NF-1 protein arising from an alternate splicing of a single NF-1 gene. NF-1 binds its consensus DNA element as a homodimer via an amino-terminal DNA binding domain, and activates transcription through a putatively novel, proline-rich, carboxy terminal transactivation domain. The NF-1 protein has been shown to recognize and bind the adenovirus type 2 promoter and activate transcription of herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase genes. The NF-1 consensus element has been found in the upstream promoter region of myriad eukaryotic genes, including that of Ha-Ras, alpha-globin, HSP 70, GRP 78, Histone H1, myelin basic protein and in the Xenopus laevis vitellogenin gene promoter.

Encoding over 1,100 genes within 132 million bases, chromosome 12 makes up about 4.5% of the human genome. A number of skeletal deformities are linked to chromosome 12 including hypochondrogenesis, achondrogenesis and Kniest dysplasia. Noonan syndrome, which includes heart and facial developmental defects among the primary symptoms, is caused by a mutant form of PTPN11 gene product, SH-PTP2. Chromosome 12 is also home to a homeobox gene cluster which encodes crucial transcription factors for morphogenesis, and the natural killer complex gene cluster encoding C-type lectin proteins which mediate the NK cell response to MHC I interaction. Trisomy 12p leads to facial development defects, seizure disorders and a host of other symptoms varying in severity depending on the extent of mosaicism and is most severe in cases of complete trisomy. The FAM101A gene product has been provisionally designated FAM101A pending further characterisation.

RecQ helicases are implicated in DNA recombination and repair helicases and are critical in genome maintenance. RecQL5 is one of five known RecQ homologues in humans, and defects in three of these (BLM, WRN and RecQ4) are associated with autosomal recessive disorders that involve genomic instability and a predisposition to cancer. The exact role of ReqL5 is unclear. It has been shown in mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells that mutations in the Recql5 genes result in a significant increase in the frequency of sister chromatid exchange (SCE), whereas deleting Recql5 lead to an even higher frequency of SCE. There are three different RecQL5 isoforms - alpha, beta and gamma, produced by alternative splicing.
