Cytochrome P450 proteins are heme-thiolate monooxygenases that mediate NADPH-dependent electron transport and function to oxidize a variety of structurally unrelated compounds, including steroids, fatty acids and xenobiotics. Specifically, Cytochrome P450s are responsible for metabolizing arachidonic acid to hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (a regulator of blood pressure) and epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (a molecule involved in Signalling events). CYP20A1 (cytochrome P450, family 20, subfamily A, polypeptide 1), also known as CYP-M, is a 462 amino acid single-pass membrane protein that belongs to the cytochrome P450 family. CYP20A1 is thought to carry its own oxygen as it lacks a conserved I-helix motif and one amino acid of its conserved heme binding site.

Predominantly localized to the nucleolus, BOP1 (Block of proliferation 1 protein) is a 746 amino acid highly conserved non-ribosomal protein that is involved in ribosome biogenesis. Truncation of the amino terminus of BOP1 leads to cell growth arrest in the G1 phase and specific inhibition of 28S and 5.8S rRNA synthesis, as well as a deficit in the cytosolic 60S ribosomal subunit. This suggests that BOP1 is involved in the formation of mature rRNAs and in the biogenesis of the 60S ribosomal subunit. BOP1 physically interacts with pescadillo (a protein involved in cell proliferation) and enables efficient incorporation of pescadillo into the nucleolar preribosomal complexes, thereby affecting rRNA maturation and the cell cycle. The BOP1-pescadillo complex is also necessary for biogenesis of 60S ribosomal subunits. Deregulation of BOP1 may lead to colorectal tumorigenesis.

Guanylins are also involved in acid neutralization and the regulation of membrane-bound guanylate cyclase Signalling molecules. Guanylin and uroguanylin are secreted primarily in the stomach, intestine, and colon. Guanylin is also detected in plasma. Guanylin is an endogenous activator of intestinal guanylate cyclase. It stimulates intestinal guanylate cyclase through the same receptor binding region as the heat-stable enterotoxins. Gut enterochromaffin cells synthesize guanylin to be a prohormone of 115 amino acids which is then is processed to the molecular form of 94 amino acids. This 10 kDa form is found circulating in the blood.
