The X and Y chromosomes are the human sex chromosomes. Chromosome X consists of about 153 million base pairs and nearly 1,000 genes. The combination of an X and Y chromosome lead to normal male development while two copies of X lead to normal female development. There are a number of conditions related to an unsual number and combination of sex chromosomes being inherited. More than one copy of the X chromosome with a Y chromosome causes Klinefelter's syndrome. A single copy of X alone leads to Turner's syndrome. More than 2 copies of the X chromosome, in the absence of a Y chromosome, is known as Triple X syndrome. Color blindness, hemophilia, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are well known X chromosome-linked conditions which affect males more frequently as males carry a single X chromosome. Gene silencing mediated by siRNAs, also called RNA interference, controls the elimination of transcripts from mobile and repetitive DNA elements of the genome but also the degradation of exogenous RNA of viral origin for instance. The miRNA pathway on the other side is a mean to specifically regulate the expression of target genes.

Importin 7 is a 1,038 amino acid protein encoded by the human gene IPO7. Importin-7 belongs to the importin b family and contains one importin N-terminal domain. Importin-7 functions in nuclear protein import, either by acting as an autonomous nuclear transport receptor or as an adapter-like protein in association with the Importin b subunit KPNB1. Acting autonomously, Importin-7 is thought to serve itself as receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) and to promote translocation of import substrates through the nuclear pore complex (NPC) by an energy requiring, Ran-dependent mechanism. At the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binds to Importin-7, the Importin-7/substrate complex dissociates and Importin-7 is re-exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. Importin-7 is a nuclear protein that is expressed in most tissues.

MIXL1 (Mix1 homeobox-like 1), also known as MIXL, is a 232 amino acid protein that localizes to the nucleus and contains one homeobox DNA-binding domain. Expressed in lymph tissues, MIXL1 functions as a transcription factor that plays an essential role in axial mesendoderm morphogenesis and endoderm formation and is also required for cellular differentiation during blood development. Additionally, MIXL1 is involved in maturation of heart and gut tissue during embryogenesis and may also act as a negative regulator of brachyury expression. Overexpression of MIXL1 is associated with non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas, suggesting a role in carcinogenesis.
