This gene encodes a protein with an N-terminal RCC1 domain and a C-terminal BTB (broad complex, tramtrack and bric-a-brac) domain. In rat, over-expression of this gene in vascular smooth muscle cells induced cellular hypertrophy. In rat, the C-terminus of RCBTB1 interacts with the angiotensin II receptor-1A. The enzyme is composed of three subunits, alpha, alpha prime and beta, which form a tetrameric holoenzyme. The alpha and alpha prime subunits are catalytic, while the beta subunit serves regulatory functions. The enzyme localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. The protein encoded by this gene is a type II membrane protein that catalyses the transfer of sialic acid from CMP sialic acid to galactose-containing substrates. The encoded protein, which is normally found in the Golgi apparatus but which can be proteolytically processed to a soluble form, is involved in the generation of the cell surface carbohydrate determinants and differentiation antigens HB6, CDw75, and CD76. This protein is a member of glycosyltransferase family 29. Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been found for this gene.
