FUNCTION: IL-8 is a chemotactic factor that attracts neutrophils, basophils, and T-cells, but not monocytes. It is also involved in neutrophil activation. It is released from several cell types in response to an inflammatory stimulus. IL-8(6-77) has a 5-10-fold higher activity on neutrophil activation, IL-8(5-77) has increased activity on neutrophil activation and IL-8(7-77) has a higher affinity to receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2 as compared to IL-8(1-77), respectively.

Bcl-2-like protein 2 (BCL2L2) belongs to the Bcl-2 family. BCL2L2 is highly expressed in thebrain, spinal cord, testis, pancreas, heart, spleen, and mammary glands. BCL2L2 is a peripheral membrane protein containing three motifs, BH1, BH2 and BH4. The BH4 motif appears to be involved in the anti-apoptotic function. The BH1 and BH2 motifs form a hydrophobic groove which acts as a docking site for the BH3 domain of some pro-apoptotic proteins. BCL2L2 promotes cell survival and blocks dexamethasone-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, BCL2L2 mediates survival of postmitotic Sertoli cells by suppressing death-promoting activity of BAX.

Leukocyte-Associated Immunoglobulin-Like Receptor 2 (LAIR2) is a secreted, 131 amino acid protein that contains one Ig-like C2 type domain, making it a member of the Ig superfamily. When compared to LAIR-1, its transmembrane counterpart, it shares 83% amino acid identity across the signal sequence and extracellular domains; although one is secreted and one is membrane-bound, the two LAIR proteins are thought to have arisen from a common gene ancestor and appear to share similar adhesion profiles. This suggests that LAIR-2 may compete with LAIR-1 for ligand binding. A 114 amino acid alternate splice form of LAIR-2 is truncated at the C terminus, but retains the entire Ig domain. The expression profile of these splice forms, and the presence of orthologs in other species, have not been reported.

Recognises a protein of 130 to 140 kDa, identified as CD22 (also known as BL-CAM). CD22 expression is restricted to normal and neoplastic B cells and is absent from other haemopoietic cell types. In B-cell ontogeny, CD22 is first expressed in the cytoplasm of pro-B and pre-B cells, and on the surface as B cells mature to become IgD+. It is not expressed by plasma cells, CD22 is found highly expressed in follicular mantle and marginal zone B-cells, and while germinal center B-cells are relatively weak. CD22 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and serves as an adhesion receptor for sialic acid-bearing ligands expressed on erythrocytes and all leukocyte classes. It also associates with tyrosine kinases and play a role in signal transduction and B-cell activation.
