Resistin known as adipose tissue-specific secretory factor (ADSF) or C/EBP-epsilon-regulated myeloid-specific secreted cysteine-rich protein (XCP1) that seems to suppress insulin ability to stimulate glucose uptake into adipose cells. The length of the resistin pre-peptide in human is 108 amino acid residues and in the mouse and rat it is 114 aa; the molecular weight is ~12.5 kDa. Resistin is a cytokine whose physiologic role has been the subject of much controversy regarding its involvement with obesity and type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Resistin has been shown to cause "high levels of 'bad' cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL), increasing the risk of heart disease, resistin increases the production of LDL in human liver cells and also degrades LDL receptors in the liver. Potentially links obesity to diabetes.

CD152 and CD28, together with their ligands B7-1 and B7-2, constitute one of the dominant costimulatory pathways that regulate T and B cell responses. CD152 and CD28 are structurally homologous molecules that are members of the immunoglobulin (Ig) gene superfamily. Both CD152 and CD28 are composed of a single Ig V-like extracellular domain, a transmembrane domain and an intracellular domain. CD152 and CD28 are both expressed on the cell surface as disulphide-linked homodimers or as monomers. CD152 was originally identified as a gene that was specifically expressed by cytotoxic T lymphocytes. However, CD152 transcripts have since been found in both Th1 and Th2, and CD4+ and CD8+ T cell clones. Whereas, CD28 expression is constitutive on the surfaces of 95% of CD4+ T cells and 50% of CD8+ T cells and is down regulated upon T cell activation, CD152 expression is upregulated rapidly following T cell activation and peaks approximately 24 hours following activation. Although both CD152 and CD28 can bind to the same ligands, CD152 binds to B71 and B72 with 20-100-fold higher affinity than CD28.

GADD45A can be induced by UV irradiation, X-rays, growth arrest and alkylating agents, of which can be mediated by some kinases other than PKC. GADD45A can interact with MAPK14, GADD45GIP1, PCNA. In T-cells, GADD45A functions as a regulator of p38 MAPKs by inhibiting p88 phosphorylation and activity. GADD45A may affect PCNA interaction with some cell division protein kinase complexes, stimulating DNA excision repair in vitro and inhibits entry of cells into S phase.

Adiponectin is a secreted protein. It is synthesized exclusively by adipocytes and secreted into plasma. Adiponectin is an important adipokine that is involved in the control of fat metabolism and insulin sensitivity, with direct anti-diabetic, anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory activities. Adiponectin Stimulates AMPK phosphorylation and activates in the liver and the skeletal muscle, enhancing glucose utilization and fatty-acid combustion. Adiponectin also antagonizes TNF-alpha by negatively regulating its expression in various tissues such as liver and macrophages, and also by counteracting its effects. It inhibits endothelial NF-kappa-B signaling through a cAMP-dependent pathway. Adiponectin may play a role in cell growth, angiogenesis and tissue remodeling by binding and sequestering various growth factors with distinct binding affinities, depending on the type of complex: LMW, MMW or HMW.

Cadherin-3 (CDH3) is a single-pass type I membrane protein that belongs to the cadherin superfamily. CDH3 is a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion glycoprotein comprised of five extracellular cadherin repeats, a transmembrane region, and a highly conserved cytoplasmic tail. CDH3 is expressed in some normal epithelial tissues and in some carcinoma cell lines. CDH3 preferentially interacts with themselves in a homophilic manner in connecting cells. CDH3 is involved in loss of heterosygosity events in breast and prostate cancer. Mutations in CDH3 have been associated with congential hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy.

Fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF-7), also known as keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), is a potent mitogen that regulates epithelial cell migration and differentiation. FGF-7 is produced by mesenchymal cells and binds in high affinity to a splice variant of FGF receptor 2 (FGFR2-IIIb). The mitogenic activity of FGF-7 acts predominantly on keratinocytes, but not on fibroblast or endothelial cells. FGF-7 expression is upregulated after acute and chronic injury, suggesting that FGF-7 functions during the healing of injured epithelial cells. FGF-7 also induces the formation of the apical ectodermal ridge during limb development.

Resistin-like molecule-beta (RELM-β) is a member of the RELM family of secreted proteins containing conserved C-terminus cysteines. The RELM family consists of Resistin (FIZZ3), RELM-α (FIZZ1), RELM-β (FIZZ2), and RELM-γ (FIZZ4). Resistin and RELM-β are the only RELM family members found in humans, whereas all four RELM family members are present in rodents. RELM-β functions to increase fibroblast proliferation and differentiation, resulting in airway remodelling and increased inflammation.
