The EF-hand domain is a twelve amino acid loop motif that is commonly found in proteins that participate in calcium-binding events within the cell. EF-hand domains generally exist in a pair that, together, form a stable four-helix bundle that enables the binding of calcium ions. EF-HA1 (EF-hand domain family, member A1) is a 434 amino acid protein that contains four EF-hand domains, suggesting a role in calcium-mediated events throughout the cell. The gene encoding EF-HA1 maps to human chromosome 13, which houses over 400 genes, such as BRCA2 and RB1, and comprises nearly 4% of the human genome. Trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, is deadly and the few who survive past one year suffer from permanent neurologic defects, difficulty eating and vulnerability to serious respiratory infections.

Calcipressin-3, also known as RCAN3 and DSCR1L2 (Down syndrome candidate region 1-like protein 2), is a 241 amino acid protein that potentially is involved in central nervous system development. Calcipressin-3 interacts with cardiac troponin I, suggesting that it may play a role in cardiac contraction events.

The mammalian homologues of the key cell death gene CED 4 in C. elegans has been identified recently from human and mouse and designated Apaf1 (for apoptosis protease activating factor 1). APIP is predicted to code for a 204 amino acid. An isoform of APIP, APIP2 encodes a 242 amino acid protein, which is an alternative splicing variant differing in its N terminus from APIP. APIP transcript is ubiquitously expressed in most adult tissue with high expression in skeletal muscle, heart, and kidney.

Ankyrin is a membrane protein that mediates the attachment of the erythrocyte membrane skeleton to the plasma membrane and interacts with CD44 and inositol triphosphate. The ankyrin repeat is a 33-residue motif in proteins consisting of two alpha helices separated by loops. It has been studied using multiple sequence alignment to determine which conserved amino acid residues are critical for folding and stability. Tyrosine hydroxylase is an excellent marker for dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurons. Tyrosine hydroxylase (a.k.a. tyrosine 3-monooxygenase) is the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the conversion of the amino acid L-tyrosine to L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). L-DOPA is a precursor for dopamine, which, in turn, is a precursor for the important neurotransmitters norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and epinephrine (adrenaline). Tyrosine hydroxylase catalyzes the rate limiting step in this synthesis of catecholamines. In humans, tyrosine hydroxylase is encoded by the TH gene, and the enzyme is present in the central nervous system (CNS), peripheral symphatic neurons and the adrenal medulla. The enzymatic activity of TH requires ferrous ions as cofactors and is believed to be regulated by phosphorylation. At least four isoforms of human TH have been identified which result from alternative splicing.
